Kitchen Garden

3/4G

On Wednesday 3/4G had their kitchen garden session in the afternoon. Everyone enjoyed doing different gardening activities despite the very warm weather.

In small groups some students worked on preparing beds for summer planting by gently loosening the soil, adding fertiliser and compost and mulching with pea straw.

These beds will now rest until November, when we will plant them out with summer vegetables. Another group worked on emptying a very large compost bin, ready to spread onto the garden beds.

Some students made seed spheres using flour, compost, water and seeds and then dug little holes amongst the herb garden where they planted them. Hopefully soon we’ll see lots of little poppy and sunflower seeds coming up.

It was a warm afternoon for some students, so they chose to do some drawings and sketches of the garden space.

Finally, there were more carrots and broad beans to pick, so a group got to work busily picking and washing them ready to snack on at then end of the session.

Thanks to our volunteers Peta and Libby for coming along to help with the session.
