Austin Warfe was awarded overall best speaker for the 2023 BQO Public Speaking Final.
And a special thanks to our exceptionally entertaining hosts, Dylan Collins and Nathan Murphy, who showcased some very fine public speaking efforts.
Debating DAV Quarter Finals
After making it through five rounds of debates at Brighton Grammar in Semester 1, two playoffs and the Octofinals, our C-Grade Team 1 from Mentone Campus went to Loreto College in Toorak for the quarterfinals of the DAV schools competition.
Students took on the topic ‘That deceiving people online about your identity, ie catfishing, should be illegal,’ arguing the negative case for this challenging topic.
This was the first time this team debated with a panel of adjudicators. After presenting a sound and considered case, one adjudicator agreed with the negative team, and two adjudicators agreed with the affirmative. The majority meant that the students were narrowly defeated. This concludes the team's participation in the competition with a wonderful result overall – from the 417 C grade teams in Victoria, they came in at 5th place.
Congratulations to the team for their tremendous effort!

Debating Friendly
After a successful event last year, three of our Year 12 debaters were invited to participate in a non-competitive debate at Star of the Sea College.
These students collaborated with the team from Star to organise the event, with the debating topic ‘That feminine hygiene products should be free nationwide.' Our students took the affirmative side of this debate, but the home-ground advantage of Star was too strong to overcome! Our congratulations to Star of the Sea for winning the debate.
Well done to Austin Warfe, Dylan Collins and Nathan Murphy for representing St Bede's College so professionally, with their well-balanced and good-humoured argument for an entertained crowd.
Thanks to our welcoming hosts at Star - we look forward to continuing this great relationship!
Junior Debating Training
A group of selected Year 7 and 8 students participated in a workshop run by a representative from the Debaters Association of Victoria, Joel Cripps. The workshop focussed on understanding and experiencing debating, and laying the foundations for students to succeed in years ahead.
Students learned about debating, how it works, how competitive debating is structured and adjudicated. The most important topic of the day was persuasion, and how to use language to be persuasive.
Everyone had the opportunity to practice their persuasive speaking across a range of topics.
We wish our students well as they prepare their skills for the ACC Junior competition this month, and our Year 8s who are gearing up to participate in the DAV schools competition next year.

In Sympathy
Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Julie Heatley, long-time staff member at St Bede's College, for the passing of her father Michael Daniels.
We keep Julie, Shane and their sons - St Bede's College alumni - Josh, Sam, Adam and Jacob, and their nephew Ben Adkins in our hearts.
