The Fathering Project

Working away from home

As we continue through mental health month, this week we are shining a light on FIFO/DIDO workers. Travelling for work and being away from the family for long periods of time is tough, and can be a source of stress and anxiety. It's important dads maintain a routine, stay connected and ensure they check in on their own mental health and wellbeing, as well as that of those around them.

Top Tips

1. Structure is key. It is important to create a good routine: wake up at the same time, exercise, allocate time to connect with the family.

2. Stay connected. Being away from the family can feel very overwhelming at times. Stay connected, whether it's regular phone calls, sending a text every day or videos to each other.

3. Check in. On your mental health and wellness, as well as your partner's. Talk with your partner and ensure you're both coping as well as you can with the situation.
