Around the Classes - Year 1

School Arrivals
To avoid disruptions to student’s learning could you please ensure your child is at school on time. The school gates open each morning at 8.25am.
Religious Education
Students will learn how family is a sign of God’s love and how we can show respect to each other. They will explore the themes of love and care through learning about the events of the Wedding at Cana and the Exodus story. Students will identify signs of God’s love in their own lives. They will also explore the Nativity Story and celebrate the period of Advent in the lead up to Christmas.
Literacy
Students will continue to participate in a variety of activities that will develop their knowledge, understanding and skills in listening, reading, viewing, speaking, writing and creating.
Reading
They will develop certain reading skills this term:
- Reading orally in a phrased, expressive and fluent manner
- Reading independently (silent reading) and group reading (reading to an audience)
- Comprehension skills; synthesising ideas, visualising, retelling & summarising
- Understanding and decoding unknown words
Writing
Students will participate in a variety of activities to develop their writing skills:
- Handwriting; focusing on correct formation of letters and numbers
- Writing specific genres including recounts, procedure reports, narratives and Christmas poetry
- Writing activities relating to our Inquiry unit
- Correct punctuation and grammar with a focus on verbs, synonyms, contractions, nouns and adjectives
Speaking and listening
Students will be given opportunities, such as Show and Tell, to engage in oral language activities to focus on developing the following skills:
- Preparing and rehearsing
- Projecting their voice
- Clear articulation
- Active listening
- Confidence
- Open-ended questions and detailed answering skills
Mathematics
- Place value
- Addition and Subtraction
- Multiplication and Division

Inquiry
Students will learn scientific knowledge and skills through hands-on exploration and experimentation with design and technology. They will investigate the sources of light and the causes of shadows. Students will develop puppets and use sounds and shadows to help tell a story.
