Athletics Carnival

Last Wednesday, we held our annual Athletics carnival at King George Oval. After much deliberation on holding the carnival with the forecasted weather we decided to go ahead. Thank goodness we did as we all had a fantastic day.

Thank you to the Lion’s Van, Mel Bush from Floatin’ Around and Jennie Dodds and her excellent P&F committee. We were well nourished and energised throughout the day thanks to your goodies you had available for us. A special shout out to Lyn Cregan and Loma Wright for baking all the staff and volunteers some delicious slices to help us stay sharp for our busy roles.  Also, thank you to Steven McAllister, Graham Archibald and his team at the Council for preparing King George Oval for us. The oval looked spectacular and the track was perfect for running.

Once again it was evident that we have an excellent parent body at our school who continuously put their hand up to volunteer at our events. Our parents were vital for the success of our Athletics Carnival and St Joseph’s is most appreciative of the time you gave to us. Thank you to the following people who helped on Friday; Matt Falconer, Adriana Pietsch, Kylie Neville, Casey Chard, Krystle Nugent, Michael Brummell, Lucy Jones, Stephanie Hollingworth, Tara Looker, Jennie Dodds, Jess Newberry, Mark Barratt, Narelle Pietsch, Tess Lonergan, Nicole Watson, Shanelle Gunther, Greg Wright, Belinda Stanton, Allanah Price, Brigitte Brummell, Fiona Meyer, Julie Watson, Colleen McLeod, Renata Davis and Michael Van der Waal.

The staff at St Joseph’s are always extremely supportive and helpful before, during and after these big sporting events. At the carnival Mr McManus mentioned all the extra jobs staff do behind the scenes to help make the day a success. In particular, John Cameron and Sharon Jarvis always have me organised with the equipment we need. They often have everything set up before anyone gets there which saves me a lot of heavy lifting. Bec Willis and Karen Fletcher also have their routines worked out for the carnivals. First aid and recording is always in good hands with these two. Cheryl Muldoon volunteered her day to record results for us. We are so lucky she is happy to spend her spare time with us which helps the day to run smoothly. Her generosity and experience is priceless. Thank you!

A special mention also goes to past St Joseph’s students Eva Villella and Ilyssa Newberry. These girls were on work experience with us last week and were kept extra busy all day at the carnival. Thank you Eva and Ilyssa! We might have to make sure our athletics carnival always coincides with Year 10 work experience in the future!

I would like to congratulate all the students on their excellent sportsmanship and participation at the carnival. No matter the ability, everyone was having a go which resulted in everyone having a great day. Below are the results from the day.

Toni Palmer Memorial Shield

Yesterday 15 of our talented Rugby League students in Stages 2 & 3 travelled to Inverell to participate in the Toni Palmer Memorial Shield. The students had a great day playing footy and meeting many students from other schools in the Diocese. Thank you to Miss Katie McMeniman who coached the Opens Palmer’s Players team consisting of Sam Barratt, Jimmy Chard, Collie Cooper, Angus Falconer, Matt Pietsch, Josh Pietsch, Ryder Swift, Sam Pope, Kash McPhillips and Lachlan Tremain along with some students from other schools. These students placed 5th overall. Our junior team; Toni’s Team, consisting of Brooke Graham, Harley McPhillips, Charlie Schalk, Alec Newberry and Jett Mitchell mixed with students from Guyra, Barraba and Mungindi to have a terrific day playing 5 games of fun footy.

Well done to these students and the sportsmanship they displayed. They were a pleasure to take to Inverell and watch them play some terrific footy.

Interschool QLD State championships

Last week Isla and Sophia Nugent travelled to Toowoomba to compete in the Interschool QLD State championships.

Sophia came home with two qualifications for the state team with both of her horses, securing her spot for Interschool nationals to be held in Tamworth in September.

Sophia won: Overall state champion primary show hunter and Reserve state champion overall primary show horse.

Isla unfortunately had a fall in the warm up arena that resulted in her having to scratch from her class. She was not badly injured, so that was the main thing!
