Council Report

Welcome back and trust you all had a great summer break. It’s also nice to be experiencing a late summer run of clement weather here in Bayside for a change, long may that continue.

The new 2024 academic year has started off with great gusto but before launching into the current year activities I would firstly like to take the time to reflect on the amazing academic achievements of the prior 2023 year.

The Year 9 students smashed their NAPLAN results out of the park, surpassed by only two other select entry schools in the network, what a fabulous RESULT!

In the same vein, the incredible VCE results placed MGSC as the 19th best performing government school in the state (and at a higher position of 13th if the select entry schools are removed), absolutely OUTSTANDING!!

A huge thank you to all the students, teachers, leadership teams, supporting groups and parents, you have all played a massive part in making this happen and you should all be very proud.

Never to rest on its laurels, going forward into 2024, MGSC will continue to focus its efforts on academic achievement and student engagement and wellbeing, ‘courage and work’ aplenty in 2024 as the school motto attests.

We have had a handful of movers and shakers from a School Council membership perspective. Geri Sumpter (parent representative), Helen Forgasz (community representative), Candice Prior (student representative) & Eloise Prior (student representative) are all stepping down from their respective positions and on behalf of the School Council we wish them well and thank them gratefully for their contributions over the many combined years of service to the school.

The School Council is in the process of recruiting new representative members to the committee and will report back in due course as we fill these various vacant roles.

Year 7 and 12 students commenced their academic activities early, participating in various early start orientation and learning conference programs, a big year ahead at both book ends of the MGSC lifecycle. All other later returning students welcomed the new Year 7 cohort at the first official assembly of the year.

The Year 12 formal a couple of weeks ago was a roaring success. A vast number and variety of pre and post party activities sandwiching the main event and thank you to everyone who contributed in making the night such a special one for all the Year 12 students.

That’s it from me and looking forward to another fun packed enriching year here at MGSC.

With best regards

Mark Murray

2024 Council President
