Careers and Pathways

As we look towards Term 2, there are lots of exciting events that will be taking place at MGSC.

Year 9 Morrisby

The My Career Insights (MCI) program (also known as “Morrisby”) will commence in early Term 2 for all Year 9 students. My Career Insights will help students to:

  • Learn about what skills and abilities they could bring to a career.
  • Find out about what jobs match their abilities, interests and personality, and the subjects they need for those jobs.

As part of the My Career Insights program, students will have free access to:

  • Complete a series of online questions and quizzes on the Morrisby website at school (or at home if it cannot be completed at school).
  • Receive a Morrisby Profile Report showing the results from the questions and quizzes, which summarises their individual strengths and interests and suggests related career paths and study options.
  • Have a 30-minute meeting with a Morrisby-trained professional Career Practitioner, who will explain the report to your child. Parents can attend this meeting.

Year 9 students will complete the initial online profiling activities on Tuesday 16th April (Week 1 of Term 2), during periods 1 to 3 inclusive at school.

Students will need to bring fully charged device to school on this day. As will be further explained to students at a Year level assembly, the profiling activities are NOT graded tests! They are simply activities that will help them to figure out their aptitudes and interests.

Then, during the week of Monday 13 May to Friday 17 May (Week 5 of Term 2), each student will be allocated to a 30-minute one-on-one meeting with a Morrisby Career Practitioner, to “unpack” their report.

These meeting times will appear on the students’ Compass schedule.

Students will receive a Parental Concent form to bring home on Friday 22 March. Please return these forms to either the Middle School Office or the Careers Office by Thursday 28 March.

Year 10 - Work Experience

Term 2 means that the Year 10 Work Experience program will soon be upon us! Work Experience is taking place during the week of Monday 17 June to Friday 21 June (Week 10 of Term 2).

During the recent Year 10 City Week activities, students attended a presentation from Ms Bouchier regarding what they might expect from their work experience week, and how to best prepare for it. They also undertook further tasks and activities pertaining to organising their placements.

Well done to all of the students (and families!) who have secured their placements already, and have returned their arrangement forms! For students who are still working on their placement – keep persisting! This is all part of the ‘experience’! Ms B will work more closely with those students who need additional assistance in securing their placements throughout Term 2.

Reminder: Work Experience Arrangement Forms aredue byFriday 10 May.

Year 11

The VCE and Careers Expo will be taking place at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre in May.

All Year 11 students will be attending an excursion to the Expo on Friday 3 May. Students will attend school for periods 1 and 2 on this day, and then meet their supervising teachers during recess to board buses to the event.

We will have time to explore the many information stalls and attend workshops and info sessions. Students will meet at the end of the afternoon for roll-marking and then will be dismissed from the venue and required to make their own way home via public transport.

Please keep your eyes peeled for the excursion consent and payment, which will be on Compass early next week!

Year 12

Term 2 will commence with all Year 12 students meeting with Ms Bouchier in a one-one-one catch up, so as to discuss their ideas and queries for their plans beyond Year 12.

Students will initially complete a Career Action Plan survey, which will form the basis of their meetings with Ms Bouchier and will guide their individual tertiary research.

Students will then be attending a series of briefings and information sessions, to further guide and grow their knowledge and understanding of how the tertiary education system works; how we apply for courses through VTAC (including SEAS, the ‘special consideration application process); and how students might best research tertiary courses and pathways.

All resource material from briefings and information sessions will be shared with parents as well, so that families can work together during this exciting time.

Trades & Tech Fit Expo

The Trade & Tech Fit Career Expo (formerly The Trades Fit) is back in 2024.

This event aims to highlight study and employment opportunities for female and gender diverse young people in years 7 to 12 in industries that are traditionally male dominated.

This expo is 100% hands-on, allowing students to design video games, lay bricks, weld, use a flight simulator, program a robot, safety test equipment, use power tools, learn to paint and more. It provides a safe and equitable space where students engage with tradies, apprentices, and industry professionals, providing insight into the breadth of career pathways where female and gender diverse people are underrepresented.

Last year, more than 2,500 students from 119 schools attended the expo. 96% of surveyed students said it helped them understand careers in trades and technology.

MGSC will be taking a select group of interested students from Years 9 to 12 along to this event on Thursday 9 May.

Students will be required to complete an Expression of Interest form, which will be posted on each Year Level Google Classroom next week. All students will be notified as to the outcome of their EOI.
