Reflections on the 2023 Rowing Season and a Look Ahead to 2024

We are now five weeks into our Learn to Row program and we have hit our capacity for numbers in our squad. Whilst ASC Rowing is a competitive program, we are above all an inclusive program. This means students of all abilities, ages, and strengths join, train, and compete with us. We have been extremely impressed with both our senior and junior rowers in 2024. All Saints’ College is especially lucky to have exclusive access to the Curtin University Boat Club as its home base for training. For the first time in four weeks, our launching area is quiet, as every single rower, regardless of experience, is out on the Canning River and they are looking good!

Many of our rowers took advantage of the opportunity to train all the way through the summer holidays and took the time to reflect on what they enjoyed about the 2023 season.

“The 2023 rowing season has been one of the best and an extremely enjoyable extracurricular. It gives me a break from the stress of school but also builds my character and pushes me to my limits. Every portion of rowing has been something to remember, from the beautiful waters to the tough competitions, and I am grateful to be beside rowers and coaches with passion and teamwork, which is important to me in the sporting world. Some key things I have gained include a way of fitness in many ways, such as rowing itself and the strength and conditioning side too.

As I said earlier, I have also gained a community of coaches and teammates who are there for me and want the best for me. I’ve also enjoyed the competition this season, with many challenges I put myself up to, winning myself a medal and some personal bests. I have also really enjoyed the post-season holiday rowing which lasted me through the 2023-24 holidays. Holiday training gave me something to do and helped me stay fit and on top of my rowing skills, which is important to me and made me feel active and happier. This incredible season and holiday training wouldn’t have happened without our incredible and dedicated coaches, who I feel have helped everyone on the team excel in their own way and give us the motivation and support we need. I am excited to see how the 2024 season plays out.”

“I have been rowing with All Saints for almost a year and started out participating in the Learn to Row program. During this time, I have gotten involved in three regattas and one State Championship. Being a part of the rowing club has helped me make new friends and achieve success in something I’m passionate about. Training throughout the whole year and school holidays helps me maintain a high level of fitness and build on my skills. I find rowing fun and rewarding and I’m looking forward to what the club can achieve this year.”

We would also like to wish Ella Riches (Year 11), who trains at Fremantle Rowing Club (FRC), all the best as she heads off to Nationals in Week 8. She will be representing All Saints’ College in the School Girls Single Scull race, and we eagerly look forward to seeing her progress in all her events.

Interhouse Swimming Carnival 2024

Congratulations to all the students who participated in and contributed to a very successful 2024 Interhouse Swimming Carnival.4

All students involved, in whatever capacity, showed true All Saints’ College House spirit and it was an outstanding event. It was great to see so many students in the pool either swimming competitively or as part of the new team games.

There was lots of excitement in the stands as students and staff cheered on their Houses throughout the day, and I would like to thank students for their exemplary behaviour, enthusiasm and positive participation. The event showcased a real sense of team spirit, as students not only competed for individual championship points but also worked diligently to represent their House and accumulate as many collective points as possible.

A huge thank you to all staff for their support on the day, whether as an official, working out logistics behind the scenes, or supervising the students in the House Bays. Thank you to our parent volunteers, and to the livestream team who enabled family and friends who couldn’t attend to watch the races. Thank you also to our amazing Year 11 Certificate II hospitality students who had prepared some amazing treats for staff and helpers.

Given that our next assembly is not until Term 2, we presented Champion winners and runners up in year group assemblies in Week 6. Students will also be acknowledged in the next assembly. Winners are listed in the document below:

The final House results were:

Lambers Cup: COWAN

Spirit Prize: O’CONNOR

ASC Hosts Perth Festival Workshops

All Saints’ College recently had the privilege of hosting a series of professional development workshops as part of the Perth Festival. These workshops provided valuable insights and practical tips for educators and artists alike, offering a deeper understanding of various aspects of live performance and creative processes.

Led by local artists and industry experts, these workshops explored sound design, stage illusion craft, and object design for the stage. Participants gained practical tips and inspiration for enhancing their work in education and the arts.

A huge thank you to the presenters, Mark Haslam, Susan Flavell and David Stewart, for sharing their expertise and enriching our community. These workshops have deepened our understanding of live performance and sparked new creative ideas.
