Graeme Wood Shield Quarter Final

Mazenod College v Belridge Secondary College

Mazenod lost the toss and was sent into bat. Runs were at a steady pace pretty much the whole innings due to a strong and tight bowling attack from Belridge. We ended up scoring 104 runs with 5 wickets down in the first innings, a score a bit under par but Belridge bowled very well.

Jevan B top scored with 28 runs and Captain Harry G was again serviceable with 23 runs.

Mazenod then bowled Belridge out for 94 runs.

The wickets were shared but pick of the bowlers were our 2 opening bowlers Riley ‘The Goulden Arm’ with 4 wickets for 27 runs off his 4 overs and Lachlan ‘Turbo’ 2 wickets for 7 runs off his 3 overs.

Graeme Wood Shield Preliminary Final

Mazenod College v Newman College

It was always going to be a tough game against Newman College who were currently undefeated in the 2024 competition, while also being the current shield holders.

Mazenod started the day with a small win by winning the toss. We elected to bat first and hopefully set a nice score to defend.

Newman bowled very tight and restricted Mazenod to 98 runs with 7 wickets down after their 20 overs. Braden F was the main contributor with the bat, scoring 35 runs not out.

The total was a little under par but still defendable if we bowled to our best.

So, it was over to our bowlers to get the job done, and that they did, bowling Newman out for a total of 52 runs. The star of the show was Micah ‘The Wizard’ A taking 6 wickets for 8 runs off his 4 overs. He bowled unbelievably well and was unhittable. Lachlan ‘Turbo’ S was again super economic with figures of 2 wickets for 5 runs off his 4 overs.

The boys played extremely well and deserved the incredible win against the odds. They were through to the Grand Final. Something that seemed a long way away back in Round 1 when Mazenod lost to Swan Christian.

Graeme Wood Shield Grand Final

Mazenod College v Swan Christian College

Mazenod won the toss and elected to bat. We scored 123 runs off 20 overs with 4 wickets down, which was a nice total to defend. Captain Harry G top scored with 45 runs not out and was judged Mazenod’s Player of the Match. Other key contributors with the bat were Nate T 33 runs and Jevan B with 25.

Swan Christian batted very well through the middle overs, reaching the total with 5 wickets down and 11 balls remaining.

Wickets were shared, but Lachlan ’Turbo’ S was the pick of the bowlers with 2 wickets for 16 runs off his 4 overs.

The boys battled on well in the contest with true Mazza spirit. We are super proud of their efforts throughout the tournament and especially to be runners-up in the competition out of 28 schools. Thanks to all involved and we are excited for the Oblate Cricket Carnival at the end of this year and the Graeme Wood Shield tournament in 2025.

SSWA Basketball

The Senior Basketball team was fortunate to only need to head to Ray Owen for the Hills Group of the SSWA Basketball tournament. The format of the day was simple, six group games, top two at the end of this would play off in the grand final.

In the first game against Lesmurdie, despite a challenging start, the team managed to secure a 24-24 draw with a remarkable comeback led by Michael. This set the tone for the rest of the tournament, demonstrating their ability to bounce back from adversity. The following game against Northam resulted in a dominant win, showcasing the team's strengths and some impressive passing and finishing on the break. This momentum carried into the next game against Swan View, where they secured another victory with a close scoreline.

However, in round two of the tournament, the team faced a setback in the rematch against Lesmurdie, experiencing a loss where we struggled to maintain the intensity that was needed. Despite this, Mazenod redeemed themselves in the rematch against Northam. Mazenod secured another win despite Northam's improved performance in the fifth game. The group stage concluded with a commendable win against Swan View, showing improvement and Mazenod playing with more freedom.

Although the grand final against Lesmurdie ended in a low-scoring loss, the team's hard work and dedication throughout the tournament were evident.

ACC Swimming Carnival

After back-to-back victories in the B Division ACC Swimming Carnival, Mazenod was promoted to the 2024 A Division Carnival. This was our first A Division appearance in many years, so there was much excitement amongst the team. With the boys demonstrating the best commitment to training in a long time, and with a number of national swimmers representing us, we were hopeful to achieve some great results.

Mazenod finished a very respectable 5th in the Overall Boy’s competition against some very large schools with established swimming programmes. We placed 4th in the Junior competition and 5th in the Senior competition. With these solid results, it is likely we will remain in A Division next year.
