April is Autism Month

Autism is where your brain in wired a little differently. It is estimated that 1 in 100 Australians are autistic. It is important that people have an understanding of autism.

At our school we have a group of students who meet regularly to ensure that our school is as inclusive as it can be. Here are some of our thoughts and beliefs.

“The majority of autistic people rather be called autistic rather than have autism. Autism is not something I carry around. It is hard wired into me.”

“Autistic people feel empathy, but we feel is so strongly that it is hard for us to show it. So, if it feels like we don’t care about your feelings it's not true we just have a hard time showing it.”

“We don’t like it when people say things like- You don’t look autistic! You can’t see my brain.”

“No one ever made a difference by being “NORMAL”. Normal is a setting on the washing machine.”

“We believe that every single person should be accepted for who they are.”

“One of the main things I would like to explain is that autistic people have varied abilities and characteristics, there is not one single experience of autism.”  -
