Book Week

What an incredible Book Week we had last week. The students participated in activities during class time and lunchtime each day.  On Monday, each class was paired up with a Buddy class and the students read with each other sharing their favourite stories

On Tuesday, We had a visit from well-known Author Felice Arena. The students loved hearing about what inspired Felice to write his amazing stories.   On Wednesday, we welcomed families to the classrooms to read together, there was a great buzz around the school as families shared a love of books together On Thursday it was the teachers' turn to share their favourite stories with the students. On Friday we had our annual book week parade. It was so exciting to see everyone dressed up and sharing a love of books and reading

Today we had a very entertaining performance from Perform Education, who made some of this year's shortlisted books come alive through singing, dancing and acting.

Quotes from Students

“I loved dressing up as an army man from one of my favourite books called Comando Comics.”

Felix M - 1/2 CE

“I enjoyed meeting Felice Arena, I loved reading his book ‘Pasta’, because I love eating pasta.”

Yazmine P 1/2 CE

“I really like Buddy Reading on Monday. I go to read with some older students that I know, it was fun to read together.”

Isla Mc 1/2 KM

“I like reading with my dad on Wednesday because at home I usually read to him, but his time he was able to read to me.”

Harry C 1/2 MV

“I like reading with my mum because when we are at home I read to her but we do not always have time for her to read to me. I love it when she reads to me.”

Maeve K 1/2 MV

“The highlight of Book Week for me was when Felice Arena visited us. He was funny & energetic about talking about his books. He was really kind and excited about being at OLA. I had only read his book 'Pasta' before and now I'm excited to read more.”

Kara Mc 3/4 TR

“My favourite part about book week was when we did the buddy reading and 1/2MV came into our classroom. I loved seeing how the 1/2's read. I enjoyed buddy reading because even if I made a mistake when reading aloud to the 1/2's, they still really enjoyed the story.”

Book Week Competitions

Thank you to everyone who entered the Book Week Competition. The entries were amazing, it was hard to choose the winners. Each Winner was able to choose a new book to read. A special thank you to Christen Wains ( Connor Watkins's mother) who donated some books to go towards the prizes.

Wakakirri

On Friday on the 18th, all the Wakakirri participants in Grade 5/6 took a bus ride to Frankston Arts Centre. We arrived at 1 o’clock and the Wakakirri team spoke to us about how the day will go on. We got set up and soon it was time for our rehearsal. We did AMAZING. Afterwards we had 3 hours to pass before our big performance. We watched other schools perform and got ready, and before we knew it we were performing in front of over 700 people.

Everyone in the audience enjoyed our performance and was moved.

On the night, there were mixed emotions of nervousness and happiness. Then after rehearsal, we felt more prepared so we were more calm. As it started, we all got nervous again.

Overall it was a great night and we are glad to perform again.

Once we performed our amazing performance, our judge Christioher said:

"This performance was really well put together. All song choices and choreography were tasteful and appropriate. You chose the moments where choreography was needed really well. The props and costumes were great - especially the poppies. I have to mention how impressed I was by how the teachers and students worked together and respected each other in rehearsals. They really communicated and worked together well! Great work! "

On the night, our school were awarded many awards and some were:

Storytelling award for story construction and clarity

Stage managers award for teamwork and backstage crew

Spirit of Wakakirri award

Overall, our performance was called a “Stunning Tribute”

Last Monday we got a very special phone call. The phone call was the Wakakirri team telling us we were one of the few schools in Victoria to go to the state finals! The Victorian state performance is going to be at Frankston Arts Centre on the 4th of September.
