Sustainability Project

Part of our project with Green Adelaide, is to consider our daily waste and what we are throwing out.  Our most recent research has brought us to realise that there are more than 3R's - reduce, reuse and recycle.  There are now 11!

Rethink:  Challenge Conventional Thinking

Refuse:  Say No to Single-Use

Reduce:  "Buy less, choose well, make it last"

Refill:  Fill Up, Waste Down

Reuse:  Use It Again and Again and Again

Repair:  Extend the Lifespan of Possessions

Resale:  Embrace Thriftopia

Rent:  Sharing is Caring

Repurpose:  Transform or Adopt

Recycle:  The Power of Circular Economy

Rot:  Composting for a Greener Tomorrow

Here are some of things that we do at Curiosity to support the 11R's.

Rethink:  Curiosity is a sustainability friendly service that is mindful of what we purchase, who we purchase with and supporting SA and Australian businesses.  We believe that our staff are our greatest resources for children and so pay them a respectful and honouring salary which requires us to be thrifty and thoughtful in our other expenditures.

Refuse:  When catering and serving our morning and afternoon programs, we use crockery and cutlery that are useable or can be composted.  We are a 'Nude Food' site that encourages families to send food that is not packaged in their child's lunch boxes.

Reduce:  We provide a 'paired back' environment that allows children to be creative with the many recycled loose parts we have on offer.  Purchasing specific to learning projects means we make responsible choices and don't waste finances.

Refill:  Staff coffee machine vs pod machine.  Filtered water tap onsite.  Purchase quantity cleaning products, glue and paints and decanter them.

Reuse:  Use our paper shopping bags for writing and art.  If you would like some please let us know as we have plenty to share.

Repair:  We have some awesome volunteers that fix things for us so that we can keep using them.

Resale:  Thrift shopping is one of our favourite past times.  You will often find items in the centre that have been purchased, donated or given to us.

Repurpose:  Mirrors, tables, chairs and plumbing pipes are just some examples of things we have tidied up and repurposed.  A lot of wooden items around the Centre are made from repurposed wood from an earlier structure we had in the Centre.

Recycle:  You may notice that we only have household bins.  That is intentional as we consider what we are throwing into the bins each week.  Children are part of this learning and with colour coded bins it does not take them long to work out what goes where.

Rot:  With our worm farm, upcoming compost bin and putting our paper waste in the greens bin every week our green waste is minimal.
