BOOK WEEK

Book Week is here! One of my favourite weeks of the year! We’ve had lots of discussions on our favourite books, our favourite book characters and the reasons why a particular book is remembered long after we have read it. We have read, enjoyed, laughed and thought about stories of every kind.

Our lunchtime programs this week have had a variety of book and writing related activities. Mr Gunn started the week with one of his favourite books The Day the Crayons Quit. Our students laughed with pleasure as Mr Gunn changed his voice for the various characters of the crayons. It was a great fun session. We have also had a “crack the book code” activity as well as students from all year levels reading and sharing their own stories. Tomorrow, we have our Book Week Dress-Up Day and an Open Reading Session on the picnic tables outside. What a great week! Remember “You can find magic wherever you look, so sit back relax, all you need is a book!” Dr Seuss.

CHILDREN’S BOOK COUNCIL OF AUSTRALIA (CBCA)

I was very much looking forward to the Book Week announcement from the Children’s Book Council of Australia regarding the Books of the Year Gold Award winners, especially as I had picked a few that I thought were outstanding books this year. Drum roll please . . . The Gold Award winners are:

The Younger Readers section: The Gold Award went to Runt by Craig Silvey and the two Silver Awards went to Evie and Rhino by Neridah Mcmullin and The Raven’s Song by Zana Fraillon.

The Early Childhood section: The Gold Award went to Where the Lyrebird Lives by Vikki Conley and the two Silver Awards went to Bev and Kev by Katrina Germein and Snap! by Anna Walker.

The Picture Book of the Year: The Gold Award went to My Strange Shrinking Parents by Zeno Sworder and the two Silver Awards went to Dirt by Sea by Tom Jellett and Paradise Sands: A Story of Enchantment by Levi Pinfold

The Eve Pownall Award for Information Books: The Gold Award went to Deep: Dive Into Hidden Worlds by Jess McGeachin and the two Silver Awards went to Come Together: Things Every Aussie Kid Should Know about the First Peoples and Wild Australian Life by Leonard Cronin.

New Illustrator Award: There is only one Winner in this category and it is Tiny Wonders by Sally Soweol Han.

Congratulations and well done to the Australian Authors and Illustrators who have won these awards. They are some of the best books published for Australian children and deserve our recognition.

The Book Week Shortlisted books are currently on display and will be available for borrowing shortly. If anyone would like further information on any of the books please come and see me or visit the CBCA website at https://cbca.org.au/

SCHOLASTIC AUSTRALIA

Thank you to Scholastic Australia for your recent donation of a new book by Tania Ingram titled Aggie Flea is Not a Liar! The blurb on the back cover says that “when a mysterious new neighbour arrives in the middle of the night, Aggie’s convinced he’s a vampire! Can she prove it? Or will everyone think she’s a liar? She’s a girl with a big imagination . . . that lands her in even bigger trouble!”

I’ve just finished reading the book and I enjoyed it. It was a fast passed, fun filled daily adventure where Aggie Flea’s imagination and creativeness knows no bounds! There is glittery mouse droppings, a Princess Zombie cartoon, a Principal with a caterpillar moustache, a helpful best buddy, a meddlesome brother and a never ending punishment of loading and unloading the dishwasher! I enjoyed the humour and could easily picture the mischief she was getting into. I look forward to Aggie Flea’s next adventure.

Read, Grow, Inspire.
