Grade One

GRADE 1 WEEK 8 Term 3

General:

Grade 1 students have been interacting with their peers with increasing patience and collaboration in both the classroom setting and outdoor spaces. This has resulted in friendship circles expanding, students showing increasing willingness to play new games and practice active listening. With many exciting events taking place over the last few weeks, we have also had lots of fun with our special visitors during our Book Week celebration. We are excited to finish Term 3 with our annual Grandparents afternoon and Father’s Day at Oatlands.

Mathematics:

Over the past few weeks, students have engaged in many open-ended tasks that have combined multiple mathematical skills into different concepts. Students have been given many opportunities to extend their current understanding in the areas of Number, Place Value, Shape, Money and Data. In addition, there have been many cross-curricular connections throughout our units embedding our Integrated concept of sustainability. To immerse students in constructive mathematics, we have engaged with student driven STEM activities that allow their creative minds to make connections with our Maths curriculum.

English:

This term in English, students published their final information report booklets before moving on to the unit of Persuasive texts. We started with a Book Week celebration of reading, growing and inspiring by immersing ourselves in the Perform! Education "WAY TOO COOL" incursion. Students made connections to a wide range of texts by reflecting upon their own experiences. Over the next few weeks, students will continue experimenting with persuasive writing through texts that model opinions and support reasons. They will participate in simple debates sharing arguments for and against selected topics.

Integrated Studies & RRRR/Cyber Safety:

Grade 1 students have been exploring the concept of Sustainability and how we can reduce our impact on the environment. They have investigated different kinds of waste and how we can reduce, reuse and recycle rubbish correctly. Students have been engaged through hands-on learning, such as sorting activities, experimenting with decomposition and have had a visit from the Cleanaway Education team. We have also made links between our actions and its effects on the oceans and marine life.

In RRRR this term, students have been learning about managing stress and learning different coping techniques they can use when presented with difficult situations. Students have also continued to learn about Cyber Safety and how to stay safe and make good choices online.
