The Career Experience program allowed students to
- Relate school studies with a workplace.
- Get an insight into the diversity of employees in the workplace.
- To obtain an understanding of the demands and expectations of the working world.
- Improve students’ maturity, confidence, and self-reliance.
- Provide a link between school and local community.
- Provide students with appropriate knowledge, skills and attitudes concerning both paid and unpaid work.
The feedback from visiting teachers and employers was extremely positive and I congratulate all the year 10 students on their excellent performance in the workplace. Employers were asked to complete a competency- based student evaluation form. The assessment indicated that overall our students presented well, were very compliant, were able to work well with other staff members, had good communication and interpersonal skills and most importantly showed great initiative. Students are advised to keep the Employer Evaluation Forms as part of their resume folio for future reference in seeking casual, part- time employment or for gaining further work experience.
Below are student reflections on their career experience and Employer Feedback
STUDENT REFLECTION
Sarina Ikin
Work Placement: Hayball Design/Architecture
Really enjoyed the project I got to work on and the workplace environment. The experience was useful as it helped me to understand the potential career path I could take. I found out what the architecture world looks like, what the job involved and potential pathways to getting into the industry. I was given a week to create a presentation of a pavilion of my own design. Resources were widely available and I was assisted in the process. I loved getting to design things and spending my time in the model making room. I didn’t want to leave because I enjoyed it so much.
Ruby Theobald
Work Placement: Good Friday Appeal
I found the week useful for me as I got to learn new skills. I came into the experience wanting to find out more about marketing and social media side. I enjoyed sitting in the meetings with their Public Relations company.
Orane Baillon
Work placement: Cheltenham Vet Clinic
I really enjoyed working at Cheltenham Vet Clinic because I love animals and I am interested in pursuing a career in veterinary medicine. The experience allowed me to understand what the job entails. I had the opportunity to observe very interesting operations on animals such as rabbits, dogs, cats and even a possum. The experience allowed me to understand the steps veterinary surgeons need to take before performing an operation. This week was too good even if it was very short. I found it superb and I would like to do it again
Caspar Seeman- ADP Consulting Engineering
Overall, this week was an interesting experience. It gave me great exposure to the profession and I gained a lot of knowledge.
