Year 5 Spotlight

Anglesea Discovery Camp

On Wednesday 6th to Friday 8th September, the Year 5’s ventured off with high excitement to Anglesea Discovery Camp, for our long-anticipated camp experience!

Everyone was very much looking forward to aspects of the camp such as enjoying cabins, camp food and the activities such as Beach Carnival, Canoeing, Mountain Biking, Giant Swing, Radio Rogaine, Hut Building and team Brain Games.

We also enjoyed free time playing outdoor activities such as Gaga Pit, night time trivia and a special film together.  It was a wonderful experience and we all had a superb time!

The Year 5 teachers (and students!) really appreciated the attendance of Jade and our 4 fabulous parent volunteers - we couldn't have done it without you!

Some of our Camp highlights and special moments include…

My three main highlights were:
Being in a cabin with a lot of friends who were fun but would be quiet when it was time to get to sleep.
The activities- My favourite was the giant swing, but they were all really fun.
The food- I think I ate more than I usually do at home!
A situation where I improved or learnt something was:
I improved on reading a map
I learnt how to play Ga Ga (best game ever invented!)
I improved on riding a bike with only hand brakes and more than three gears

~ Alex (5A)

I’m super afraid of heights so going on the giant swing was freaking me out but I realized that it wasn’t actually that high and it wasn’t as hard for me to actually go on the swing. I didn’t go to the top but I’m still proud of myself for giving it a go.

~ Amelia (5A)

My highlights were Radio Rogaine Dessert and Beach Carnival! I learned the phonetic alphabet during radio Rogaine. I also improved in gaga, which is an Israeli version of dodge ball that is played in a pit.

~ Anna (5A)

My top 3 highlights
The games you could play in the free time like basketball, soccer and gaga, and more.
Canoeing was also super fun, it was fun doing the 3 water games, the don’t get the turtle in your canoe, don’t touch the river grass or bump in to someone else with 3 lives and the race.
Going on the giant swing and feeling the breeze in the air.
I also learnt the phonetic alphabet in radio Rogaine and the giant swing pushed me out of my comfort zone.

~ Rylee (5A)

I learnt to keep trying after I fail lots of times on the mountain bikes. I ended up being able switch between gears, after the teachers taught me how to do it. It was very fun after doing and I wish that I could do it again!!!!!

~ Andie (5B)

My camp highlights included Cabins because I liked being in a cabin with my friends. I also enjoyed Giant Swing because I liked swing through the air. And finally, I loved the Crate climbing because I liked the yellow boxes. Crate climbing was really fun because you got to improve your climbing, thinking, and building.

~ Cameron (5B)

The food was a camp highlight – it was the best camp food that I’ve ever had, and that’s saying a lot- I’ve been to three other camps!
I learnt new techniques in hut building. I tried a new strategy- I stuck a forked stick into the ground and leant a stick between the fork in the tree and the stick. It built for a perfect tepee!

~ Grace J (5B)

When I was canoeing, I learnt that you and your partner have to work together and both people have to put 100 percent effort. And not to give up even when you fail, you must prevail. I could see that people were scared because they were stuck or they weren’t able to turn around and that made me feel better knowing I wasn’t the only one struggling. When I finished, I realised it wasn’t as easy as it looked but, in my opinion, it was as fun as it looked. I was very grateful I was able to go canoeing.

~ Hazel (5B)

I really enjoyed the Mountain Biking. It was really exhilarating and fun at the same time, you would bounce around on your bike as you plummeted forward down the rocky field.  When you saw the bumpy logs, your heart would drop and then you would come back to life as you bumped over the logs. Every time I went over the course I would improve and be less scared. I’m so happy I was able to do it because it was one of the best parts of camp. It taught everyone to be resilient and brave even when you’re scared. Everyone that did it had a good time and it was a great experience.

~ Heather (5B)

At camp I really enjoyed the beach carnival because there were fun activities like relays, sandcastle comps, flags, treasure hunt and ring toss. My favourite activity was the flags, to start you would have to lie on your belly with your hands out in front of you. When the person in front calls out ‘GO’ you would have to stand up as quickly as possible and run up hill as fast as you can in the sand. There would be sticks sticking out of the sand. You would have to dive for one and then one person would always be out.  It was really enjoyable and I wish I could do it all again.

~ Lila (5B)

My camp highlights were…

Team Brain games - It was very fun and it developed my skills of figuring out a riddle. Me and my team worked well and found it very fun, we learned lots of new games and loved it!
Giant Swing - It made me feel nervous and excited. It also pushed my limit of how high I can go and I enjoyed it!
Hut Building - Hut building was a challenging activity and it made me waterproof and build using sticks and bark in ways I normally wouldn’t.

~ Jasper (5C)

As soon as we got off the bus and plopped our bags down, everyone was already buzzing about the beach carnival. There was one instructor at the front and one at the back and about 77 kids in the middle of the two instructors as we walked down to the beach from camp base!

~ Eliza and Audrey (5C)

As I slowly get pulled higher and higher up the huge giant swing, I look down determined to go higher than last time. I watch everyone pull the rope and I keep going higher. I think to myself wow this isn’t very high is it. Suddenly I feel very high, very, very high. I scream “stop!” – the Giant swing was awesome!
