Year 4/5

Science
We finished last term, exploring Biological Science and the living world. We learned about adaptations — the special features or behaviours that help living things survive in their environments. We’ve explored the three main types of adaptations:
Physical (body features like fur or claws)
Behavioural (actions like migration or hunting at night)
Physiological (internal functions like sweating or storing water)
We discovered how these adaptations help animals and humans survive and thrive in different environments. We also learned how adaptations can lead to the development of new traits and even new species over time. We especially enjoyed looking at how humans adapt — by changing how we live, what we wear, and even how our bodies function — to suit the places we live.
It’s been a fascinating learning adventure that links science with real-world examples of survival, change, and growth. The highlight was being Scientists and testing the theory that our opposable thumbs are an important human adaptation.
Geography
We are off an adventure this term!
We have been exploring the amazing natural features of Australia. From the dry deserts of the interior to the lush rainforests of Queensland, we’ve learned how Australia’s unique landscapes, climates, and ecosystems make it a truly special place.
Highlights included learning about Uluru and Kakadu in the Northern Territory, the Blue Mountains in New South Wales, Cradle Mountain in Tasmania, and the Great Barrier Reef—so big it can be seen from space! We also discovered the importance of features like the Murray River, Lake Eyre, and Australia’s coastlines, and how these places are home to many native plants and animals.
It’s a Big Wide World Out There
We have also been exploring the wonders of our world! We’ve learned about continents, countries, and imaginary lines like the Equator and Prime Meridian that help us understand how Earth works.
We’ve studied natural landmarks like the Grand Canyon, Mount Everest, and Victoria Falls, and discovered how amazing environments are formed by erosion, tectonic plates, and volcanoes.
We were especially fascinated by the Northern Lights, the colourful light show in the night sky caused by solar particles, and by natural wonders like Victoria Falls, which the locals call 'The Smoke That Thunders'.
Learning about these amazing things has helped us appreciate the beauty and diversity of the Great Southern Land and the amazing world out theimportance of protecting our environment for the future. It is also helping us develop a deeper understanding of the world around us and has sparked curiosity about other places, people, and natural processes across the globe.
Maths
We have been learning how to read and create 1-to-many picture graphs. These special graphs use pictures to represent groups of items, with each picture standing for more than one object. We explored how to collect data, choose a key, and display results clearly. We enjoyed using pictures to show information in a fun and visual way, helping us make sense of numbers and patterns.
