Prep/1 Classroom News
Welcome to Term 3! It was great to see students back at school with lots of smiling faces and happy chatter about holiday events. We have a fun term planned with lots of new learning. Special events include the Prep 100 days of School event and Book Week coming up in the next few weeks. I have been busy planning a handover to Mr D who will teach the class from Week 5! I will look forward to seeing all the students and families after my Long Service Leave!
Focus Text: Wombat Stew
For the first 3 weeks of Term 3 we have focused on the well known picture story book 'Wombat Stew'. We have learnt about the characters, the setting and the plot. Our writing focus has been on procedural text. We have written our own procedural text in the form of a recipe. Students made up their own recipe using a variety of fun ingredients for their own 'stew'. We have learnt facts about wombats, drawn the characters from the text and completed handwriting tasks about the storyline.

Sounds Write
Prep students have now been learning about digraphs (2 letters making 1 sound) such as 'sh', 'ch' and 'th'. Students have been building, reading and writing words with these sounds. We have also continued to write on a single line in our writing books, improving our size and formation. Year 1 students have focused on line placement when handwriting and the Sounds Write units covering the 'u' and 's' sounds with the spellings - u/ou/o and s/ss/st/c/ce/se/sc! (That's a LOT of ways to spell the 's' sound!)
In Maths we learnt about measuring the mass of classroom objects. Students compared and ordered objects according to its weight. To directly compare mass, students hefted (lifted one in each hand) a variety of objects to feel the difference.
In our Digital Technology lessons, students have used the desktop computers and iPads to access a variety of school apps including Mathletics, Teach Your Monster to Read, Sounds Write and Moose Maths. Students are familiar with logging on with their own username and password and navigating their way to the required programs. Students can type a series of sentences on the WORD program and will soon start using the Typing Club program.
Our Science focus this term is on Chemical Science. We are learning about the different materials objects are made from. Students will learn that objects can be composed of one or more materials as they observe and manipulate a variety of everyday items, identifying the materials they are made of.
Several times each week, students take part in our ‘Learning Through Play’ sessions, which provide valuable opportunities to develop personal and social skills. During these sessions, children learn how to include others, build friendships, and work collaboratively. They also practise using positive and respectful language to express their feelings and describe their experiences, whether during positive interactions or when resolving conflicts. Key social skills such as taking turns, sharing, packing up, teamwork, problem-solving, and conflict resolution are all nurtured through these engaging play-based experiences.
Our resources over the past few weeks have included LEGO, Mobilo, constructor straws, drawing, computer apps, puppets, magnets, puzzles, the train set and felt boards.
