Choosing to Pause: Why Reflection Days Matter

At Mount Alvernia College, our Franciscan values call us not just to do, but to pause, to listen deeply, and to reflect. Amidst the busyness of assessments, co-curriculars, and the everyday hum of school life, Reflection Days offer something increasingly rare and precious: time to breathe, time to connect, and time to realign with what matters most.

Unfortunately, we’ve noticed a growing trend in recent years, some students and families are beginning to view Reflection Days as optional or “days off.” But to step away from them is to miss a powerful opportunity for growth and grounding.

Each Reflection Day is thoughtfully designed to meet students where they are—emotionally, spiritually, and socially. Whether it’s navigating the early challenges of secondary school, deepening friendships, or exploring what it means to live out our shared values of compassion, humility, peace, and service, these days invite students to pause and be present. They are moments to check in with themselves and with each other.

In our Franciscan tradition, reflection is not a luxury, it is a necessity. St Francis himself modelled a life of contemplation and connection, recognising that without intentional stillness, we lose sight of our purpose. These days are woven into our college calendar not as extras, but as essentials, as important as any class or exam.

Reflection Days are not passive retreats. They are days rich with meaning: filled with stories, laughter, silence, prayer, challenge, and renewal. They’re a space where girls can be vulnerable, courageous, and authentic without the pressure of grades or expectations.

As we look ahead to the final Reflection Days of the year, we encourage all families to prioritise attendance. Your child’s presence matters - not just for her own growth, but for the spirit of the community we continue to build together.

We are better when we make time to reflect, to reconnect, and to remember who we are, and who we are called to be.
