From the Classroom

News from The Seniors

We’ve jumped straight back into learning and are already diving into some exciting topics.

In English, we’ve started reading August and Jones by Pip Harry — a heartfelt story about two unlikely friends facing their own personal challenges. As we read, we’re exploring the relationships between characters and comparing the very different lives of August and Jones.

In Maths, we’re beginning with rounding and estimation strategies, along with reading and converting between 12- and 24-hour time. Students will use this knowledge to create daily schedules and calculate elapsed time. We’ll also begin a unit on measurement and capacity later this fortnight.

For Inquiry, our focus this term is Colonial Australia in the 1800s. Students will investigate how and why British colonies expanded, explore the gold rush, and learn about the experiences of different groups who came to Australia during this time. This ties in perfectly with our upcoming camp to Sovereign Hill in Week 8, where students will experience what life was like on the goldfields.

Middle School News

Once again our Middle Unit students have come back Ready to Learn, settled and excited to be back with their friends!

In Middle A, we have begun our new class novel, The Callers. Students have been delving into characterisation, plot devices and vocabulary. The students have been very engaged when reading and analysing the text and we are all excited to see how the characters progress and what happens next in the story!

Middle B are learning about perspective and argument through the eyes of 'The Big, Bad, Wolf'.

In Numeracy, Middle A have been focusing on fractions and angles. We have been looking at where we can find both in our every day life and in the classroom and around the school.  The students have been very creative at finding fractions and angles all around their space and it has been very impressive!

Middle B have been working on their number fluency and learning about fractions in number and shapes.

This term, we are studying 'living things' for Inquiry and Science. In week 4 we will be visiting Healesville Sanctuary to assist with our learning. Students will be researching different life cycles of various animals as well as habitat, diet and adaptations that help them survive in their environments.

Juniors Tell All

Week 1 down and the classrooms are buzzing! Our students have settled in wonderfully and are all set for an exciting term ahead.

Junior A have dived into their first text 'Wombat Stew', where they have been practicing retelling the story, and performing different elements of the story using props to help make their own wombat stews! Junior B have been building their understanding of persuasion through the story 'Hey Little Ant', using high and low modality words in their writing to help their audience understand perspective.

The Junior unit have been loving their 'hands-on' approach to maths! Junior A have given their 'super hero eyes' a workout by focusing on seeing the number of dots and naming the amount super fast like a superhero! Junior B have been impressing us with their multiplication skills through repeated addition and equal groups, representing these with unifix and written sums.

This term, our Junior students have jumped into a fun history unit all about Then and Now! We kicked things off by zooming into the future, drawing themselves as oldies, and then took a step back in time to explore old-school artefacts, gadgets and games. Lots of giggles, guesses and "what even is this?!" moments already! Stay tuned for more info on our Back in Time Incursion day on September 9th too.
