Waste Warriors

Edendale Farm

On the 30th July, the Semester 1 Waste Warriors visited Edendale Farm to learn about sustainable action. We spent the morning with our facilitator called Carolyn as we took part in 3 educational workshops.

Young changemakers

We discovered the stories of young changemakers around the world.

These are young people like us who were inspired to make a difference in the environment. Each of them had a different style of leadership, for example being a hands on conservationist, mobilizers, innovators, communicators and joiners. We read about their stories and we also had to describe their skills and qualities. We chose empathy, courage, passion.

Food Footprint

Also we hade a look at the different amounts of land, water and green house gases it takes to produce meat from cows, pigs, sheep and  insects.

We discovered that cows have the greatest impact on our environment and that maybe we should think of more ways to use insects as a source of protein. We talked about the ways we can reduce food miles, packaging, food waste and production and if you where wondering what food miles where well they are how far your food travels to get here.

Farm tour

First, we went to go see the composting and worm farms to see how they are used to reduce food waste. Next we fed the chickens and then we went to go see the alpacas and sheep. Did you know that alpacas have softer fur than sheep?

We had lots of fun on our day out and have come back pumped up to make a difference in our own school.
