Curriculum Matters

Foundation

In Inquiry, we have begun our study of scientists and what they do.

We have started making our own predictions, making observations, completing experiments and sharing our findings.. Just like real scientists!

Sometimes our predictions are correct (dirty hands will make the bread go mouldy faster) and sometimes they are a bit too adventurous (dirty hands will make the bread explode). BUT we’re having fun learning along the way!

FG had fun at our Karate session last week, check out some of our moves!

Level 1

In SEL, one of our recent focuses has been empathy—what it means to truly understand how someone else might be feeling.

Students explored the idea of "putting themselves in someone else's shoes" and discussed how showing kindness, listening, and offering support can make a big difference in their relationships with others.

Alongside empathy, we’ve also been learning about having a growth mindset—the belief that we can get better at anything with effort, persistence, and learning from mistakes. Students talked about the power of the word “yet” (as in, “I can’t do this… yet!”) and celebrated challenges as opportunities to grow.

In Numeracy, we have been learning about data.

To make learning engaging and hands-on, students developed their own “Mustachio Questions”—quirky, fun questions to ask their classmates. To keep track of their findings, students used tally marks, a simple but effective way to organise information. Once the data was collected, they used it to create colourful graphs, learning how to read and interpret the information they had gathered.

The students absolutely loved this activity—not only did it help strengthen their understanding of data, but it also gave them a chance to collaborate, communicate, and get creative with their questions.

It was fantastic to see their confidence grow as they shared their results and discussed what the data told them.

Level 2

Last Wednesday the 6th of August, the Level 2s had an exciting day on our excursion to Rush HQ!

We jumped on trampolines, played dodgeball, bounced into foam pits and even took on the high ropes course. There were so many fun activities to try! After that, we headed to the Waverley Park playground, where we explored huge tunnel slides, swings, water play, a sand pit, flying fox, trampolines and more.

This special day was part of our Inquiry topic, Healthy Living, where we learned that moving our bodies and staying active helps us become happy, healthy humans!

Level 3

The Level 3 students have had a great couple of weeks building on our team work skills and also our bike riding capabilities.

We were lucky enough to participate in a bike safety lesson last week. We learnt how to check our bike is safe for riding using the ABCD rule. Once our bike was deemed safe for riding, we got to show off our amazing riding skills in a number of manoeuvres. It was lots of fun and we rode our bikes with a big smile on our faces.

As part of Level 3 sport this week, we competed in a team relay.

We raced against other teams in wheelbarrow races, piggyback races, and sprints using our team work skills to support and cheer each other across the finish line.

Level 4

Over the past 2 weeks the level 4 students have been developing a growth mindset by embracing challenges and learning from mistakes.

Through class discussions and activities, they are becoming more confident in their ability to improve and persist, understanding that effort leads to success.

During inquiry students explored famous inventions and their impact on the world. Using K’NEX building sets, they brought their learning to life by designing and constructing imaginative models such as helicopters, flying saucers, and other creative inventions.

Level 5

Our Year 5 students have been shining both on and off the stage!

A huge congratulations to all the students involved in Wakakirri. Your dedication to attending every rehearsal, performing at the Performing Arts Showcase, and delivering such an outstanding performance on the big night has been truly impressive.

You should all be incredibly proud of your hard work and teamwork.

For students who did not participate in Wakakirri, the past weeks have been filled with exciting STEM activities where designing, brainstorming, creative thinking, and teamwork were put to the test. These challenges have encouraged problem-solving skills and inspired some fantastic innovations.

In the classroom, Year 5 have been busily developing their understanding of fractions, decimals, and percentages. This week, they put their skills into action by planning a class party — calculating costs, comparing deals, and making sure every delicious detail added up perfectly. It’s been wonderful to see maths come to life in such a fun and practical way!

Our literacy learning has continued with a focus on reading, writing, and researching animal adaptations. Students are eagerly preparing for their Big Write next week, where they’ll put their knowledge and creativity to the test.

During SEL sessions, students have been building their teamwork skills through fun and challenging team games, learning how to communicate, collaborate, and support one another.

Level 6

For our homework, level 6 students had to make a kindness poster, to persuade others to choose kindness.

We had to put a unique statement on our poster to inspire others.

I put “Be yourself, be kind, you matter,” and “Kindness makes everybody happy.”

The posters, from 6V, are displayed on the front windows facing out towards the oval to encourage students to be kind!
