A brief overview of some of the events we have coming up in our sport programs.

Soccer afterschool at SJV

After a successful program with Football Star Academy last term, we have decided to work together with them this term and have them bring a soccer program to SJV after school on a Monday evening. If you are keen to give it a try, just go to the QR code on the flyer and register with them and they will be in contact with you. If you have any questions about the program please contact the area manager Johnny, you will see his number on the flyer.

We brought soccer to school of an afternoon a few years ago and it had a fabulous number of students involved. So hopefully we can get this interest back again in 2025.

SJV off to Regionals Netball

Congratulations to our year 6 netball team who will be embarking on the Eastern Metropolitan Regional Finals on Wednesday 13th August. The girls played a great tournament 2 weeks ago. Winning 3 games and drawing one. We faced the team we drew to in the final and even though the bodies were tired, the girls powered on and got themselves through to the Regional finals with a 20-12 win. They played so well as a team. We look forward to having Adele joining us after injury at the next round also. She has been a great assistant coach and cheer squad in the lead up.

On Wednesday the 23rd of July the nine of us went on a long bus ride to play division Netball. As soon as we got there, we played our first game against Labernum. It was a tough game with lots of challenges but we pushed through and tied with them. After the game we had a break filled with lots of lollies and tasty food to refuel us for the next game. Our next game was a lot less tough and we won pretty easily by around 15 points against Kerrimuir and straight after a game against Rangeview. The winner of the game would go to the grand final and we won. It was hard, but we locked in and focused on playing our best. We had a bit of a rest after the game and talked about our game plan. We decided that we would try hard to win but would still focus on the main thing, to have fun! It was finally time to play! We sang our chant proudly and ran out onto the court. We were playing the team that we versed earlier, Laburnum, and they put up a hard fight but we came through with the win! We were going to go to regionals! We were so proud of each other and were so happy! We had defeated all the teams and were going to play again in a couple of weeks, in the REGIONALS!!!!!!!!!! A big thank you to Mrs Wall for coaching.

Division AFL

AFL 9’s was a great experience, with all our friends and our coach, Mr. Crowe. We unfortunately didn’t make regionals, but we did beat the best team, Kerrimuir United. They beat us twice last time we played them so we improved a lot. Throughout the day, we showed great sportsmanship and supported our teammates with encouraging words and advice. In the semi finals, Spencer in 6D kicked a marvellous goal from 30 metres out, and we celebrated like we won the grand final. Unfortunately, we still lost that game, but it was an amazing day overall, playing with all our school friends in one team, and kicking goals together! And that's what AFL 9s is all about, having fun!

Year 4 Basketball Day

The students had a great day last Monday! Students got to play a sport they already love with new teams and others had only ever played in class, got to experience a real game for the first time! All played a minimum of 5 games against various schools in our district. Everyone left with smiles on their faces! Thank you again to Jess, Jim and Carlie for your assistance on Monday, it was greatly appreciated. Thank you again to our teachers - Tim, Nikki, Cath, Lauren and Bec and our year 6 students Jett and Angelina for also coaching our teams and ensuring the students had a great day!

If you could please send your basketball tops through this week, it would be greatly appreciated as we will need these for our 5&6 basketball day in a few weeks. Thank you

4-6 Athletics Trials

Will be held at Bill Steward Athletics Track on Thursday 14th August. It is a day for the students to have a fun day experiencing various athletic events, field & track, and practice what we have been learning/reviewing over the past 4 weeks during our athletics. This day also acts as a trials day for the District Athletics day on September 11. Students win house points on the day, not ribbons as we have our Twilight sports event in term 4 for this. So students can wear their sports uniform with some house colours.

Those students that have opted to run in the 1500m and hurdles will need to be at school to get on a bus at 8.50am so that we can run these events earlier. (These students have confirmed this with me as of last week), then the rest of the students will participate in the other 8 events on a rotational basis (which has been inserted below). Then we will conclude the day with the 800m races from 1.50pm. Times below are approximate.

Thank you to those that have said they can assist on the day, you should have received an email from me to double check so that I can then allocate you a task.

9.15am - 1500m events (Genders of same age group will run together - 3 races)

9.30-9.45am start - hurdles all age groups

If you will be attending the day as a spectator or volunteer. There is a new sign in procedure that we will need you to fill in before watching your child or volunteering. You will be able to do this if you head up to the results table on the track. You simply just have to take a photo of the QR code on the sheet and sign in your details. You will need to also repeat this process if you wish to take your child home after the event. When doing this, please see your teacher first and then head to the results area to follow the same process to sign them out. Thanks for your assistance with this and keeping our students safe.

Year 5&6 Basketball Day

Will be held in week 6 at the Dandenong Basketball Stadium. Thank you to those that have popped their hand up to assist on the day. If you have not received anything from me and you are available, please touch base. If you opted to score on the day, please come along if you wish to as many or as little of the games. I will put the fixture in operoo when this becomes available. #Please note that when I add this after the Operoo has been added I think you have to refresh the permission form and scroll down to the bottom of the form to see any additions I have made.

If any students have tops from last year, could you please hand these in this week so we have enough for the day, as this one is quite a large competition with 13 of our own teams entered.

Students will see their teams on the sport board this week.

Spotlight on learning

Our year 1 & 2 students have been getting right into our skipping unit over the past 2 weeks. With some students all over it and trying new tricks each week while others picking up a rope for the first time and realising it is a little harder than it looks but persisting which has been fantastic to see. This week we brought in the kangaroo club and the #20 club. It gave the students a little more motivation to keep going and trying new things. To be part of the kangaroo club students could skip 5 or more skips in a row and they could put their name down on the board and receive a wristband - some of you may have seen these at home if they made it that far ;). The #20 club they could choose what type of jump they wanted to do but had to be able to do it for 20 skips or more! Not everyone got there last week, but there were many that were keen to keep trying and having another go and now know they have something to work towards next week. A great experience and also goes with our word of the term - persistence - very well.

Our year 3 students are working on their target skills this term. These past two weeks we have worked on our bowls skills. Have had lots of fun playing challenging games and lots of rotations that involve the students to use the bowls in various ways. We will finish off this unit with the students playing a bowls round robin against their classmates in the coming weeks.
