3/4N News

This term in Integrated Studies the 3/4 students are learning all about Forces. Over the course of four weeks, the children will participate in various experiments investigating the forces of magnetism, air resistance, gravity, and friction. This week in 3/4N we investigated the force of magnetism. In pairs or groups of three, the children participated in three experiments testing if the force of magnetism was strong enough to travel through things. Part of the process involved the students following the scientific method. First, they had to hypothesise what they thought would happen and why. Next, they conducted three experiments where they tested the force of magnetism through paper, a ruler and a glass filled with water. Then after each experiment, they recorded their findings by drawing a picture and writing a brief explanation. The students then reflected on their hypothesis, drew conclusions, and recorded what stayed the same and the variables.
It was great to see the pleasure reflected on the students’ faces as they engaged in each experiment. Not only did they learn about the force of magnetism, but they also demonstrated our school learning behaviour ‘Work Together.’ Within each pairing or group, the students had to cooperate, listen, and respond to each other, be involved in the process, do their share, encourage and support each other and be fair. It was fantastic to see so many skills in action throughout this process. We are looking forward to investigating the force of friction next week.
