Year 5/6

English
In our Literacy Block we have continued to engage in a number of different elements of reading, writing and spelling in Term 3. Our class novel this term is Tom Appleby - Convict Boy. A fictional story of a young chimneysweep who is sent to Australia on The First Fleet in 1788. Our writing focus is information texts and students are using the knowledge gains from the mentor text and throughout out Humanities Unit to draft a report on The First Fleet. Students have also been engaging in daily fluency reading, handwriting and language conventions lessons.
Maths
In Maths this term we have been learning about fractions, decimals and percentages. Students have identified equivalent fractions and converted between mixed numbers and improper fractions as well as adding and subtracting fractions. We will finalise this unit next week and move onto our Measurement and Time Unit.
Humanities
Our Humanities Unit on History this term links to our reading and writing focus. Students are researching and identifying different elements of the first colonies of Australia and their impact on the land and the cultures here before them. Students have been learning about the Federation of Australia and the key people involved in establishing the country that we now know as a Australia.
Spelling Bee
Next week we have the Prime Minister's Spelling Bee. Unfortunately we have a large number of our 5/6 students who will be away representing the school on Friday at Interschool Basketball so we will run our Spelling Bee as a cohort on Thursday so that students don't miss out on the opportunity to compete and win prizes. We do require parental consent to take part so please ensure your child has returned their permission slip.
Camp
Camp Howqua is coming around fast and we will send out the Compass Event early next week. The dates for the camp will be Oct 21-24, early in Term 4. Further information and forms will be sent home in the coming weeks about dietary, medical and cabin preferences.
