Year 3/4

Welcome back to Term 3! Â Â
Â
Firstly, a belated congratulations to the 3/4s students for their fantastic plays at the end of last Semester. A huge thank you to Jared Smith for organising the plays. Also, a huge thank you to Mark Sostheim, Alby's dad for making the amazing props (the army tanker and the beanstalk) and to the parents and students for organising costumes.Â
Â
Â
📚 Thank you!
Thanks to all parents for ensuring the Holiday Bags came back on the very first day — they’ve kicked off Term 3 beautifully. Students have used their bag items both for Speaking & Listening sessions and for writing their Holiday Recounts — and they absolutely loved it.
🚀 Literacy Focus: The Iron Man by Ted Hughes
The 3/4s have been captivated by our class novel The Iron Man. Through this novel we are focussing on diving deep into the characters by paying close attention to descriptions, actions, speech and thoughts. This then will build the ability to make inferences about a character’s motivation, feelings and point of view. We are also developing skills to identify key events within a text and then being able to summarise these effectively.Â
Â
We continue to build literacy skills during our daily program that focuses on Spelling, Reading and Writing. This term the children have a handwriting booklet (Thank you Miss Coppe!) to assist and support skills in letter formation and cursive joining writing. Two Occupational Therapists are doing a placement here and they have also been helping reinforce the need for good posture when working at tables and how this positively impacts handwriting.Â
Â
In Creative Writing we have been working on the genre of ‘Recounts’, with a focus on the key elements of the text type and descriptive language when describing events, feelings and thoughts. The children have been writing recounts on their holiday, weekend or other important events that they want to share. Â
It has been wonderful to see so many of our children so proud of their work and being very keen to share and celebrate their work with their classmates!Â
Â
🔢 Maths: Four‑Operations Review & FractionsÂ
The first two weeks students have focused on revising the four operations addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. During 2 sessions, students worked with all the 3/4s on a Detective Maths Investigation. They also used the four operations as maths questions to figure out when their birthday was etc.Â
Â
The next three weeks we are focusing on Fractions.Â
Â
Humanities Â
Under the umbrella of Historical Knowledge and Understanding we have been learning about ‘The First Fleet’. Â
The children are learning to understand what the First Fleet was and why it was sent to Australia. The children have created a timeline highlighting major events and places of the 8-month journey from Portsmouth, England. They are also learning about what life was like for the passengers onboard the ships.Â
