Year 1/2

Literacy

In Literacy, students are currently completing a novel study on 'The Lorax.' Students have been exploring comprehension strategies such as visualising and answering text based questions. We have been unpacking characters and exploring the cause and effect of characters choices. This novel has led to many great discussion, including the impact of deforestation and how we can look after the environment.

In Writing, we have been learning how to write a summary based on the text, how to write in a sequence and identifying the important sections. Students have developed this skill by beginning with 'retelling', and verbalising a response, to now writing them.

Students have blown us away with their summary writing skills!

Students have also been learning all about sentences, to support them in identifying the correct piece of punctuation that needs to go at the end of a sentence. These are statements (.), commands (.), exclamations (!) and questions (?)

Maths

In Maths, students have been exploring multiplication. So far they have practised their skip counting, making equal groups and making arrays. Next week, they will be finishing off their multiplication unit with bar models and a post-test to show all that they have learnt.

Students have also been exploring measurement. They have used informal units of measurement to measure the length and weight of objects around the classroom.

Humanities

In Humanities this term we’ve taken a deep dive into history. Each week we have been reading a story from the ‘My Place’ text to look at how places, people and communities change over time. The children have co-constructed a class timeline, and have enjoyed placing each of the My Place characters along the timeline and discussing how their lives are similar and different. This week we have been discussing traditions, and the children enjoyed sharing traditions that are relevant to them in their lives. Some were new and frequent (such as games night on the weekend) and some have developed across generations (like special family recipes and favourite holiday spots). It has been wonderful to hear how much these mean to the children! 😊
