It's normal for young children to feel anxious at times — starting school, meeting new people, or trying something unfamiliar can all be overwhelming. As parents, there are simple and effective ways to support your child through these feelings.
1. Listen and reassure: Let your child talk about their worries. Reassure them that it's okay to feel anxious and that you’re there to help.
2. Keep routines predictable: A calm, consistent daily routine helps children feel safe and secure.
3. Practice calming strategies together: Deep breathing, drawing, or quiet play can help children feel more in control of their emotions.
4. Avoid avoiding: Gently encourage your child to face their fears in small steps. Celebrate their bravery, even if it’s just trying something new for a few minutes.
5. Model calm behaviour: Children take cues from adults. Showing calmness, even in stressful situations, teaches them how to respond.
If your child’s anxiety feels overwhelming or persistent, consider speaking to your GP or a child mental health professional for extra support. You're not alone — help is always available.
