Year 11 & 12 Vet Sport and Rec Snow Camp

On the 22nd of July our Year 11 and 12 VET Sport & Rec students headed up to Mount Hotham for snow camp.

They were blessed with some amazing conditions, fresh snow and lots of terrain open. All students did a great job progressing their ski and snowboard skills and also developed their snowball fighting skills!

They learnt about assessing and managing risk, working in a team and showing independence.

Thanks to Mr. Sellers and Graeme for their help and all the students for making it such a great trip and representing our school so well!

Congratulations Billy!

The Surf Coast Secondary College community would like to congratulate Billy O. on his incredible efforts recently, competing in the WBC Muay Thai Festival in Verona, Italy.

Billy earned a gold medal in the Featherweight Under-18 Division for Australia!

Billy’s coach, Matt Williams, said Billy displayed not only exceptional technical skill but also remarkable maturity, composure, and resilience over the course of the four-day tournament. Here's a brief summary of Billy’s tournament:

  • In his first match, Billy faced a strong opponent from France, winning with a convincing three-round performance.

  • He then went up against the tournament favourite from England in what many considered the match of the day — a razor-close, high-level technical battle showcasing both fighters’ mastery of the art.

  • Billy’s third bout was against a tough fighter from Uzbekistan, who became visibly frustrated with Billy’s elusive style. When Billy was declared the winner, the opponent attempted to instigate conflict after the bell — but Billy remained composed and showed great discipline and professionalism.

  • In the final, Billy faced a hard-hitting Austrian fighter known for his knockout power. Billy was hurt early but recovered quickly, showing immense grit and tactical awareness to secure the win and claim gold.

In addition to his performances in the ring, Billy showed impressive dedication behind the scenes. He managed his weight class responsibly, jogging and using a sauna blanket daily to make weight. He might say that his toughest opponent might have been resisting carbonara until after the final.

Billy now holds a 10-1 record as a fighter. His efforts didn’t go unnoticed — the WBC international media team interviewed him after the event and named him one to watch for the next tournament in Bangkok, 2026.

We are incredibly proud of Billy, not only for his gold medal but for his sportsmanship and how he represented the values of his club, Bones MMA, throughout the tournament.

Intermediate Boys Badminton

On Thursday 28th of July, Surf Coast Secondary College headed out to Norlane and were well represented by six of our elite students for Badminton.

There were some high-level competition on the day as all 3 teams went down in the first round, but came back firing in the next where all 3 teams tasted sweet success.

A big thank you to Tom Butler for organizing the day for our wonderful students who behaved beautifully on the day and represented our school with pride: Taj G., Tim B., Bentley K., Ruben M., Liam S. and Dash W.

Surf Coast Arts Trail 2025

Students exhibited their small scale sculptures at Ashmore Arts for the Surf Coast Arts Trail 2025 with big crowds passing through to enjoy the exhibiting artists.

Feedback from the community was overwhelmingly positive with many commenting on the quality and maturity of the work from our students.

Their work ‘tidelines’ examined the impact of industry on the local marine environment, specifically the integration of mirco-plastics. They used reclaimed and repurposed materials to create their work.

This work will be re-exhibited later in the year for our annual exhibition at the school, Artwave. Many thanks to Ashmore Arts owner Stuart for providing such a great space and opportunity for our young artists!

Junior Girls Hockey

Our Year 7 and 8 girls hockey team were incredible on the field, showcasing fast and controlled midfield action, a rock-solid defence, and relentless pressure through the centre forward line. Their excellent respectful conduct and teamwork made Surf Coast proud—both on and off the field.

It was an absolute pleasure taking this group of dedicated students. Special mention to our brave goalkeepers—there was a moment of silence when the call went out to pad up, but a few legends eventually stepped in (or were gently volunteered!). Thanks to those who accepted the challenge.

Congratulations on all three (out of three) wins throughout the day! The team now progresses to the next round, where they will face their rivals early Term 4.

Goal Scorers: Skye, Pippa, Willow, Tulci & Millie

Goal Keppers: Millie, Isla, Skye, Willow, Pia & Jemma.

It's so great to see so many positive postcards earned for students demonstrating the College values with particular mention to year 8 for receiving the most.

Check out how close the podium is between 1st and 3rd. It could end up with any house leading by the end of the year!
