Year 10 Deep Learning Legal Studies

This year as part of the Year 10 Deep Learning Legal Studies course, students worked in groups to prepare a presentation on a topical real life murder case. In semester 2, the murder cases were the Mushroom Murderer, the Woodchip Killer, the Pilot Camper and the Pollen Strangler cases. Two groups prepared a presentation on each case and the assessment was based on compliance with rubric requirements, a class vote, participation points and collaboration.

Mr Leyland and Mr Dowie sat in on the presentations and were very impressed with the effort that the students had put in to research the cases, prepare engaging powerpoint slides and enthusiastically present to the class. Tuong Vi Trinh said that this was "one of the most enjoyable and interesting class activities" she had participated in at VUSC, and Caleb Dargan commented that it was a "great opportunity to understand the detail of what actually happens in a murder case".

Year 9 Farewell Assembly

On Thursday 27th November, the Junior Campus held a special assembly to farewell the Year 9 students as they begin their transition to the Senior Campus. As well as the numerous Year 7-9 awards and the announcement of the 2026 Captains team, this very special poem written by Mason Jury was read out to everyone present, which encapsulates the feeling among students and staff alike as we say goodbye and good luck to our Year 9's:

The term winds down and something shifts in place,

The room we knew now feels a little strange,

The lessons fade, leaving a quieter space,

A sign that soon our patterns start to change.

We moved through texts without much thought of time,

Just doing what each ordinary day

Required of us, nothing grand, no climb,

Yet now those small routines feel far away.

The benches, books, the hum of turning pages

Hold weight in ways they never did before,

The year grows still, as though it softly gauges

The slow withdrawal from what we can’t restore.

And though it ends without a loud goodbye,

It mattered more than we can specify.

Select Entry Accelerated Learning (SEAL) Accreditation Review

On Monday, 17 November 2025, our school underwent a review and accreditation process for our SEAL program through The Academy of Accredited SEAL Schools (TAASS). We were pleased to host Rod Williamson (Executive Officer, SEAL/TAASS) and Kellie Ind (Principal, Box Hill High School), who met with our Principal Elaine Hazim, Enrichment Leader Clare Mercadante, SEAL Coordinator Juliana Hamit, and students from our Year 7 and Year 8 SEAL classes.

The visit was highly successful, with valuable discussions about the implementation and growth of our SEAL program. We were very pleased to receive the email below from Rod, acknowledging our program, our school and our students.

Dear Elaine,

Thank you for hosting Kellie and I on Monday for your Re-Accreditation Review. We thoroughly enjoyed our time visiting your school and engaging with you, your SEAL team and your fabulous students.

We would like to confirm that Victoria University Secondary College meets all criteria and has been re-accredited as a TAASS/ SEAL provider for the next 4 years (2029). We congratulate you and your team on the quality of your SEAL program.

The presentation and discussion with you both about the VUSC SEAL program was very informative and gave us a comprehensive picture of your program and the school's teaching and learning approaches and curriculum.

Your SEAL student representatives were wonderful to speak with and they were a testament to the high quality program offered at VUSC. Their energy, enthusiasm and positivity were inspiring.

Congratulations and thank you once again,

Best wishes,

Rod Williamson

Chess Club - all welcome!

The VUSC Chess Club at the Junior Campus is a welcoming community for both beginners and experienced players to practice, compete and enjoy the game of chess. The club runs every Tuesday and Thursday during lunchtime — a perfect opportunity for students to relax, have fun with friends, and form new connections.

The club began with just two students — myself from 8A and Benny from 8B. We met at the after-school Homework Club, discovered our shared passion for chess, and thought, why not start a club? After some planning, we were able to secure a room and teacher supervision to make it official.

Throughout Term 3, we gained several members and held regular meetings featuring presentations to help everyone strengthen their chess fundamentals. This term, we’re aiming even higher — with friendly tournaments and fun chess puzzles to challenge and inspire all members. If you would like to learn more, come along to C2 on Tuesday or Thursday at lunchtime or please reach out to Ms Patane or Ms Cho.
