Grade 5/6

What a busy few weeks we have had in Grade 5/6! Term Three is always action packed, with many students participating in AFL 9s last week, and we also have swimming next week and Hooptime fast approaching! Book Week is also a highlight, and I would like to thank all of the parents and students for their amazing efforts each year!
Within English, students are showcasing their fabulous writing skills by planning, drafting and publishing a persuasive text on child labour. Using our whole class text, 'Rivet Boy', as well as supplementary non-fiction texts on the effects of child labour, students have created notes to form strong arguments. It has been wonderful to watch our class become confident authors who use high modality words and emotive language to persuade their audience. I am looking forward to the students being able to showcase their final products during parent/teacher interviews at the end of this term!
Within Mathematics, we have finished our unit on time, with students increasing their accuracy converting between 12- and 24-hour times, calculating elapsed time and using timetables. We have now started our unit on fractions and decimals! As always, I encourage you to ask your child what they have been learning about in class, and see how topics can be connected to real life. Telling the time at home, calculating what time an activity will end, using fractions when cooking and decimals when paying with money are all great examples of applying our maths knowledge at home!
Humanities has seen a continued exploration of migrants in Australia and significant events that have shaped the nation. Science continues to explore light, with students having made shadow puppets, conducted experiments to see the difference between translucent, transparent and opaque materials, explored reflection through mirrored writing and hands-on experiments, and attempted to make their own rainbows!
Our class was also lucky enough to receive a visit from the Variety Children's Foundation, where a wonderful speaker shared her experience with Autism, and discussed ways we can all be inclusive towards people with diverse needs and disabilities. The Grade 5/6s showcased their beautiful manners and inclusive nature, and we felt very lucky to have this experience! Earlier that day, our School and Vice Captains also proudly represented George Street at the Variety Bash. Well done to Olivia, Kahn, Acacia and Anakie for attending this event with such pride and respect!
Also, a huge congratulations to our very own talented artist and school captain Olivia Pearson, who submitted some of her artworks into the Coleraine Art Show and received an honourable mention! Olivia was also offered an amazing $250 to sell one of her art pieces! Well done Olivia, you should be incredibly proud of your achievement- the Grade 5/6 class are extremely proud of you!
Just a reminder that Monday is a pupil free day, and swimming begins next week. Homework has also started up again for this term, and students are strongly encouraged to read aloud each night at home. Please reach out if you have any questions!
