House Athletics Day
The Head of PE, Kirsten Travis along with the 2025 School Sport Captains, Nina, Zac and Harriet were interviewed about their involvement in Athletics as one of the many school sports days.
House Athletics Day is held every year and is a celebration of energy, teamwork, and school spirit, with students from all houses coming together to compete across a variety of track and field events. The day is filled with friendly competition from Year 4 to Year 6, laughter, and plenty of cheering, with the School sport captains highlighting their favourite parts as “racing people you want to beat,” “hanging out with friends,” and trying all the events from the 200 metres to vortex throws. Many had been preparing over the past term during PE, practising their throwing, jumping, and sprinting techniques, with some even refining their relay baton exchanges during lunchtimes. One sport captain admitted her go-to breakfast was a smoothie, while others kept things simple with toast or eggs before hitting the track.
Ms Travis, the Head of PE, shared her reflections as both a teacher and former elite gymnast, recalling her favourite part of the day being the chance to stand back and watch every student participate and proudly share stories of their efforts. With nearly three decades of PE teaching under her belt, she spoke fondly of her own sporting journey, including a fully funded gymnastics training trip to Switzerland at age 12 and some spectacular injuries from the uneven bars along the way. Her funniest school sports day memory was a teacher’s race that ended in one teacher pulling a hamstring mid-sprint—no ambulance needed, thankfully!
It was clear from both the staff and students that Athletics Day was about much more than just winning ribbons. It was about community, personal bests, healthy habits, and finding joy in movement. Whether students were aiming for a podium finish or just giving it a go, the day was a vibrant display of school pride, effort, and encouragement.
