Notes for Sailing

A limited number of places are available for the Sailing Development Program, and the program is heavily reliant on volunteer support.  If parents/carers, or grandparents are available to assist in any way, please note on this registration form. Team Racing is generally reserved for competent sailors, or those with some experience not beginners. If unsure, please register and the coaching staff will liaise to ascertain suitability. Students wishing to participate in either sailing programs must be able to swim 50 metres and tread water for five minutes.

Notes for Rowing

Rowing at St Virgil’s College has been a proud tradition since 1912, building not only strong athletes but also confident, resilient young men. The 2025/26 season begins in Week 1 of Term 4 and continues through Term 1 next year, with training based at our well-equipped New Town Bay Rowing Centre. The program caters to all levels, from Year 6 beginners to senior crews competing at state and national levels, and offers expert coaching, quality facilities, and a supportive community. Rowers will take part in regular training sessions, camps, and regattas across Tasmania, with a strong focus on teamwork, discipline, and personal growth.

The 2025-26 Rowing Handbook contains information for the season, including training schedules, regatta dates, selection criteria, fees, uniform requirements, and expectations for attendance and conduct. Students wishing to participate must be able to swim 50 metres and tread water for five minutes. If registrations exceed capacity, trials may be conducted to determine final squad placements. All new and interested students are encouraged to attend a Learn to Row Day - Saturday 20 September (Term 3), New Town Bay Rowing Centre, from 10.00 am -12.00 pm.  To register for the Learn to Row Day, click this link.  Any further Rowing queries can be directed to Oliver Wilson-Haffenden, Director of Rowing at OWilsonHaffenden@stvirgils.tas.edu.au .

First Aid and Sports Trainers Needed

We are seeking assistance from qualified Parents/Carers for our teams and programs. If you hold any relevant qualifications and are available to lend your support, please provide your details below. It’s important to note that all individuals offering their services in a first aid or sports trainer role must possess a valid Working with Vulnerable People (WWVP) card and complete a brief induction program for College Volunteers.

Registration Details

Please be advised that the registration period closes promptly at 5.00 pm on Friday 12 September 2025. To ensure a smooth registration process, we kindly ask that Students and their Parents/Carers discuss their options prior to signing up. This cooperation will help prevent any duplicate registrations or enrollment in activities that the student may not be interested in participating in. The days and times allotted for each activity are listed above to facilitate thoughtful decisions.

To register, please click here and complete the Google Registration Form.

Commitment to Participation

Once students have registered and been placed on a team, it is crucial that they commit to attending all scheduled games throughout the season, including any finals. This commitment is vital for fostering team cohesion and ensuring optimal team performance. In the unfortunate circumstance that a student is unwell or suffers an injury preventing them from playing, it is essential to inform the team coach at the earliest opportunity. Timely communication enables the coach to make necessary adjustments to the team's lineup, maximizing the team's competitive edge.

Inclusivity at St Virgil's College

At St Virgil's College, we pride ourselves on being an inclusive institution. We strive to accommodate all students who register for their chosen activities. However, please note that in situations where numbers or resources are limited, selection trials and specific criteria may be implemented.

Upcoming Information

Further details regarding team trials(if required), team lists, rosters, and other pertinent information for the Term 4 Co-Curricular Activities will be provided in the near future.

Buses will depart from the basketball courts at the direction of College staff. This transport will not be supervised by College staff or volunteer coaches. College staff and/or volunteer coaches will meet the team at the destination. AFL Umpiring

Congratulations to our outstanding Year 9 Recreation Leadership students! On Tuesday, 14 of them confidently took on the important role of umpires at the Southern Primary School Sports Association Winter Football Carnival, held at the Cadbury's Oval, Claremont.

Having just completed an introductory umpiring course, these students excelled under the guidance of AFL Tasmania and State Umpiring Manager Garry Dunne.

The feedback from players, coaches, and spectators was overwhelmingly positive, highlighting their exceptional performance. Our students demonstrated remarkable teamwork and dedication, and they should take immense pride in their accomplishments!

Kudos to Harvey Alomes, Edward Beven, Mahli Bird, Ned Hill, Lucas Johnson, Samuel Lapham, Kai Martin, Jay Mills, Josaiah Naufahu, Oliver Sharpen, Rhys Skelly, Tom Splann, Edward Turnbull, and Thomas Wilson! You all showed what true leadership looks like today!

MTB

Shout out to Year 10 student-athlete Jonte Tummon! Jonte recently traveled to Europe for five weeks to compete in downhill races with the support of the Apogee Academy race team.

In his first race, Jonte participated in the IXS European Cup in Aprica, Italy, where he finished 18th after experiencing a crash during his race run.

Next, he raced in the IXS Cup in Spicak, Czech Republic, achieving an impressive 2nd place, finishing just 0.073 seconds behind the winner.

Following that, he traveled to Austria, where he secured another podium finish with a 3rd place at the Rookies Cup downhill in Saalbach.

To conclude his trip, Jonte headed to France to compete at Les Orres in another IXS European Cup event, where he finished in 15th place.

These amazing opportunities for Jonte would not be possible without the incredible support from his sponsors: NF, Cyclingo, Santa Cruz Bicycles, Maydena Bike Park, SRAM, and Apogee Academy.

Well done, Jonte! Keep reaching for the stars!

Diabetes Australia Fundraiser - Schools Triathlon

As part of our participation in the School Triathlon Challenge this year, we're fundraising to help Diabetes Australia create a future where diabetes can do no harm.

Right now, more than 1.5 million Australians are living with diabetes. Every step we take and every dollar we raise helps change the lives of real people — parents, kids, grandparents, and friends — who are living with or at risk of diabetes.

With your support, we're:

  • Raising awareness
  • Funding vital research
  • Funding our DiaBuddies youth programs
  • Supporting those in need
  • Helping build a future where diabetes can do no harm
  • We’re showing people with diabetes that they are not alone — and that together, we’re stronger.

Please help us reach our goal by making a donation through our page. See the link here.

It only takes a minute, and anything you can give (no matter how large or small) will go a long way to helping us reach our target.

Thank you, Team sVc appreciates your support.

Treaty Day

The College came together for Treaty Day last Friday, to mark the significant day that George Augustus Robinson shook hands with Mannalargenna, the leader of the Northeast Pairrebeenne clan, making an agreement that many believe compelled the Aboriginal people to go peacefully to Flinders Island on the understanding that they would one day be allowed to return to their Country.

Years 9 and 10 students played the AFL Treaty Match, wearing the 2021 Reconciliation jumper, designed by SVC students (Year 12 Chandler Bradley) and Lachlan Nichols (SVC 2020) using motifs describing the plants, animals, and landscapes of muwinina Country.

The event began with an Acknowledgement of Country and Smoking Ceremony, led by Rob Anders.

Congratulations to all players, umpires, and our school community for being part of this significant day on the College calendar.

For the record, Team Blue (Kev's Kangas) 7.2.44 def Team White (Dave's Dingos) 4.9.33.
