Mary Rice Centre Fundraising

Donate today via Qkr! for the Mary Rice Day Walkathon this Friday 22 August!

Donations for the Mary Rice Day Walkathon have been collected via Qkr! and cash throughout this week but Friday is our big day!! Funds raised will be donated to the Edmund Rice Centre, Nairobi, Kenya (formerly known as the Mary Rice Centre) and will help underprivileged children access food and education. To raise awareness in the community, our Year 12 students will be walking from the Junior School to the Senior School in the morning, arriving in time for our Mass, before participating again in the whole college Walkathon in the afternoon.

Let’s make this the best year yet for donations!

Please note when using Qkr: When your phone is out of the immediate area, St Virgil’s and other schools can be difficult to find. Type ‘College’ in the search field and scroll down to find St Virgil’s College.

Gumnuts to Buttons

Gumnuts and Buttons is a "visual and interactive simulation activity" designed to give students an understanding and empathy for Tasmanian Aboriginal peoples' history; students imagine they are from one of the nine language groups during the activity - Oyster Bay (Moo-Mairemener people), South East, North East, Ben Lomond, Northern Midlands, Northern (Pallittorre people), North West, South West, and the Big River people; also mentions the Plair-heke-hiller-plue (Emu Bay) people. The activity gave our students a view of European settlement through the eyes of Tasmanian Aboriginal people. Year 9 A, B and C undertook this last week, Year 9 D and E will be participating in this next week. This is a rich experience and we thank the presenters from NITA Education who came to the college to walk us through it. The program is an integral part of our Reconciliation Action Plan.

Religious Literacy Assessment (RLA)

Last week, our Year 4 and Year 8 cohort sat the RLA, a system-wide, standardised assessment for students enrolled in Catholic schools in Tasmania. The purpose of the RLA is to measure student learning of the content within our Religious Education curriculum. The various reports that will be made available to us can be used to provide direction around subject matter and content in our religion classes.

Thank you

This is my last STAR report and I’d like to thank all the parents support I have received since stepping into this position two and a half years ago. Moving down from Queensland was a huge step, but one I have never regretted (perhaps maybe just once or twice doing duty in the quad in the winter mornings!). My best wishes to all the students, who have taught me so much and helped me grow as an educator and leader.

Loving God, As I say goodbye, bless those who remain.

Help them to continue to learn and grow, and welcome new opportunities with hope.

Keep our community strong in faith, united in friendship, and open to Your guiding love.

Amen
