Principal's Report

I was privileged enough to be able to participate in the Downhill Snowsports Program on Monday. Having the opportunity to spend time with our students is always so enjoyable. This was made even more special because we were in the mountains, experiencing a unique type of learning.
I then took our small band of cross-country skiers out on Tuesday afternoon. The advanced students spent time on skill development with the Snow Australia coach, Jacob Huseby, and parent Andy Stafford. The beginners were with me learning how to balance, have their weight on the grip/kick zone and how to stop.
The amount of work that goes on behind the scenes to organise any event or activity is huge, but to get these programs running is even bigger. Thanks to Lenny Comerford for all his work and passion with our snow programs. The school also relies heavily on volunteers and without the parents that give their time to help make these events work, we would not be able to offer such amazing experiences to our students, so a big thank you to them as well.
Shane Jarvis, works for XLam out of North Baranduda. This company, part of the Hyne Group, build wood panels for use in the construction industry, designed to tackle climate change, use sustainable building materials and offer an environmentally responsible building solution.
Shane is an ex-student from Mount Beauty Secondary College, and one day realised that he could support his company’s recycling processes by donating left over timber to the school for use in the woodwork classes. Shane delivered the first trailer load of pine today. Thanks to Shane and XLam for their generosity in donating this wood.
In Term 4, the school will be undergoing our Review, which is held every 4 years and will look back at the progress of the school over the last 4 years and help set the direction for the next 4 years. Part of the process involves the development of the Pre-Review Self Evaluation (PRSE) report, which provides a summary of the school’s progress and achievements and helps to highlight potential areas to work on in the future.
We’d like to hear from all of our school community, families, students and staff, and collect some data which will be used to help develop the PRSE. Please complete the short survey, which is open until Friday 22nd August. A link will be emailed through Compass to families, students and staff.
On Monday, 4th August, it was National Aboriginal and Islander Children’s Day. This day was established in 1988 and was historically used to communally celebrate the birthdays of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who were taken from their families at an early age, without knowing their birthday.
Saturday August 9th is the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, designed to raise awareness and protect the rights of the Indigenous population. It also provides an opportunity to recognise the achievements and contributions that indigenous people make to improve world issues.
On Wednesday the 13th of August, the School Council will be meeting in Room 9 at 6.15pm. All school community members are welcome to attend and observe the proceedings.
