Junior Learning Community

Year 1
In Mathematics, we have started our new unit on Sharing and Grouping. During this unit, students will learn to partition collections into equal groups and skip count by 2s, 5s and 10s to count collections to at least 120. They will also be able to solve problems involving addition and subtraction of numbers to 20.
In Literacy, we have been focusing on a range of spelling and grammar concepts. Students have been learning to add the suffix ‘-ly’ to form adverbs, as well as exploring contractions and how they are used in writing. We have also been working on spelling patterns, including ‘ey’ as in key, ‘y’ as in puppy, ‘oi’ as in coin, and ‘oy’ as in boy. We encourage students to read at home each night and ask that guardians regularly record this in their child’s reading journal.
Religion: We have completed our first Religion topic for the term, Jesus’ Story, and will now begin our next unit, Let’s Care for Creation. In this unit, students will explore the wonders of creation and develop a deeper appreciation for how we can care for it.
‘Walk and Talk' Excursion: The Grade 1 and 2 students enjoyed a beautiful, sunny day walking to and from Thompson’s Beach. We were fortunate to have Aunty Hilda from Parks Victoria join us as a guest speaker, and we also had the opportunity to walk across the Old Cobram Bridge. It’s safe to say there were some tired students by the end of the day! This experience has been a wonderful way to learn about Cobram’s history and make meaningful connections to our local area.
Week 7 and 8 Important Dates:
- 1st and 2nd of September: Father’s Day Stall
- 5th of September: Father’s Day Picnic at 1.30pm
- 10th of September: Athletics Carnival
Year 2
The children had a wonderful time on Monday enjoying the sunshine, fresh air, and a day of learning beyond the classroom during our excursion to Thompson’s Beach and the new and old bridge. A highlight of the day was hearing from our guest speaker, Aunty Hilda from Parks Victoria, who shared the importance of our connection to the Yorta Yorta people and the Murray River.
In Literacy this week, students have been exploring the text Under the Southern Cross. This book has sparked their curiosity with fascinating facts and information about the many beautiful places across Australia.
In Mathematics, our focus has been on Shape. Students have been busy identifying regular and irregular polygons and recognising parallel lines.
