Learning Space News

Year 3/4

Reading

This term students are reading the book 'Wonder' by R.J. Palacio.  It’s a great story that helps students talk about kindness, courage, and understanding others. This book is used to practise reading skills like making inferences, summarising the main ideas, and thinking about how different characters see things.  Students are enjoying the story and learning how to think more deeply about what they have read. There have been great discussions and activities that help students connect the story to our own lives.

Writing

Students have been learning how to write reviews.  They have been practising how to share their opinions about books, games, movies, and food — and explain why they feel that way.  They are learning how to give reasons and examples to support their thinking.

Next students will be learning about poetry. They will read and write different types of poems and play with words and sounds. They will use techniques like rhyme, repetition and describing words to create fun and interesting poems that show their ideas and feelings.

Mathematics

Students are learning about fractions, shapes, and place value. They are using shapes, objects, and number lines to understand fractions, like halves, quarters, and eighths.

Students are also exploring 2D shapes and 3D objects — their names, how many faces, edges, and vertices they have, and how to sort them.

Inquiry

This term students are learning about democracy and government in Australia. They are exploring the different types of government — like local, state, and federal — and learning how laws and rules are made. They are also talking about what it means to be a good citizen.  Next week students will participate in a incursion where they will take part in a mock election.  These sessions will help students understand how voting works and why it’s important - a great way for students to learn about how decisions are made in our country.

Common Interest Groups

Every two weeks, students take part in 'Common Interest Groups'. These are fun sessions where students across the learning space come together based on things they enjoy. There are different activities to choose from like games, drawing, sport, and more. These groups help students make new friends and work with people they may not usually talk to.  It’s a great way to build confidence, teamwork and have fun in a relaxed environment.
