Good Guy Bad Guy

Are you a good guy or a bad guy? 

Video games are full of them; protagonists and antagonists, heroes and villains, players and boss-level baddies, Pac-man vs Ghost Monsters! 

One of the biggest revelations of the Protestant Reformation was simply this; we are both good guy AND bad guy at the same time. Pick up some litter; I’m a good guy. Throw it out my car window; I’m a bad guy. Tell the truth in one sentence; good guy. Tell lies in the very next sentence; bad guy. 

Maybe you’ve heard Martin Luther’s revolutionary Biblical teaching before; “we are at the same time both saint and sinner” or as Wreck-it Ralph - a video game bad guy - puts it in the movie we examined in chapel; “I don’t want to be a bad guy anymore!”. The Bible is clear on this (Romans 7:15-20, Psalm 51.5) but how we process it is up to us. 

Personally, I believe that as Christians this is a reminder that we need to be honest with ourselves, acknowledge our imperfections and wrongful actions and say sorry to those we’ve wronged and to God who is grieved by our sins. We receive God’s forgiveness, and then, give it our all to do it better next time.
