Engineering Immersion Day

Students visited Monash Engineering on Tuesday 26th November for an Immersion day. The Dean of Engineering opened the event with a lecture by Professor Yiannis Ventikos Freng followed by an introduction to the various faculties of engineering.

They then moved into various workshops spanning Mechanical, Materials, Chemical, Environmental, Civil, Electrical engineering and Robotics as well as the ever-popular Monash Motor Sports. These workshops were facilitated by the wonderful staff and students, many of them JMSS alumni. It was great for the students to meet ex-students and hear about their university experiences.

Many thanks to Monash Engineering and Emily Smerdon who organised and coordinated the day including the wonderful morning and afternoon tea and lunch for the 200+ students and staff that attended.

Student feedback:

"Very inspiring speech to attract students into engineering and also the personal experiences of the student ambassadors."

List of workshops with full names:

Chemical engineering: Clean water
Civil engineering: Spaghetti Challenge
Environmental engineering: Sustainable Structures
Electrical and Computer Systems engineering: Sound and Vision
Materials engineering: Materials unplugged
Mechanical and aerospace engineering: Layer by layer
Monash Motorsport: Driverless cars
Robotics and Mechatronics engineering: Collaborative robots

“Quotes are from student feedback - what did you like best about this workshop”

Chemical Engineering

“The hands on experiment where we got to try and filter water to our best and compare the methods that are most efficient in filtering dirty water.”

Robotics

“Getting to see the maker spaces and talk to some of the students one on one”

Mechanical Engineering

“Getting to design our own 3D model as well as the patience of the engineering students while they helped us.”

Environmental Engineering

“It was also really fun and interactive and the problem was one that was fun and not too challenging no that it seemed unrealistic. The faculty supervising were also really fun and very supportive and gave us little hints to solve our challenge,”

Materials Engineering

“trying to guess the rankings of the chocolates and testing them out together"

Civil Engineering

“I liked how we got to experience the many things to consider to construct a structure to hold weight as well as being light as possible.”

Motorsport

“hands on, got to code and test our code with the car. the people running the workshop helped us write our code when we got stuck.”

“It was fun to improve our code with trial and error and the competition was also really fun”

Electrical Engineering

“I liked the sophisticated electrical components that were in used and the MATLAB program which was quite interesting, along with the fact that we can use personalised songs to learn."
