We enjoy learning Year 8 Maths

by Aiden L and Stephanie K, Year 8 students

We really liked learning the recent topics of Year 8 Mathematics through a variety of fun activities!

Starting with our statistics assignment; instead of being given a data set, we collected lolly jar estimates from the class. Every student gave the number of lollies they thought was in the jar. The winner was the person with the closest guess to the actual value. We had two winners, and both were generous in sharing some of their lolly prize with the class.

We then applied the class data to complete the statistics assignment. For example, we found the median, mean, mode, range, outliers and even drew a histogram according to our class guess data. Although the assignment was a common assessment task, we had good fun and applied our mathematical knowledge.

Following this we completed a series of measurement activities. We walked out of the classroom to the quadrangle and estimated the circumference of the circle with the Box Hill High School logo. Some groups used rough steps whilst walking around, while others used their heights to estimate the diameter. Without the use of calculators or measurement tools, we managed to get very close to the correct answer. This activity was a refreshing change from our normal Maths work.

Then we had an interesting challenge to work out the surface area of a ‘Favourites’ chocolate box. The winning group earned some chocolate and green chronicles. This was a fun and engaging activity.

We really appreciated the opportunities to learn and use our mathematics knowledge and skills in such a fun and insightful way. Thanks to all our wonderful Maths teachers!
