Year 8 Girls' STEM Enhancement Excursion

City on the Sea

On Friday 29 November, ten high ability Year 8 girls from Box Hill High School participated in a STEM enhancement excursion at Mount Scopus Memorial College in Burwood.

The day began with a keynote presentation by Dr Dianne McGrath (pictured in the banner image with our students) who spoke about her amazing adventures such as sailing around the world and preparing for a one-way mission to Mars. This challenged the students to think about what they would need to do to prepare for and design a more sustainable future.

Next, students broke into groups to work with other students from a range of schools in Melbourne. Together, they conducted research and considered factors that would impact how they created their city on the sea, such as disaster management, building an environment, energy considerations and waste management.

The final sessions of the day invited students to work collaboratively to design their cities and prepare a poster presenting their plans.

Overall, this was an exciting opportunity for our students to work with high ability students from other schools to explore important issues such as sustainability and the impacts of climate change.
