Music update - spring concert
by Mr Troy Rogers, Instrumental Music Coordinator
The end of Term 3 saw the Annual Spring Concert take place at Box Hill Town Hall. The school community turned out in force to witness a fabulous concert, showcasing the musical talent of the many Instrumental Music students at Box Hill High School.
All school-based ensembles performed, along with many other musical acts including soloists, small ensembles and the Year 12 Rock Band. Thank you to all of the student performers, instrumental teaching staff and the amazing Tech Crew, lead by the equally amazing Berni Sweeney. The Tech Crew were responsible for the incredible lighting and sound, helping us all look and sound great. Congratulations to all involved.
Term 4 has seen many quadrangle performances from our ensembles, the first being from the Orchestra.
Students came together for two rehearsals of ‘Swan Lake’ by Tchaikovsky and performed the piece for an appreciative audience. The orchestra performance was a ‘one off’, giving members of the Senior Strings and Wind Symphony the chance to have an orchestral experience at the end of the year. It was such a success though, we plan to combine the Wind Symphony and Senior Strings twice a year from next year.
2024 will be my final year as the Director of Music. It has been an absolute joy to lead an exceptional Music Department and give the students of Box Hill High School the opportunity to have a positive and varied musical experience.
In many ways, I believe I had one of the best jobs in the world, seeing our young musicians develop their musical abilities and see them gain confidence in themselves. It has been an absolute privilege to be in a position to help shape the music program and have a positive influence on many student’s lives. I will take away many amazing memories from the past sixteen years and will never forget many of the incredible students who have passed through the music program.
I will continue to be a part of the Music Team at Box Hill High School and look forward to having a focus on my role as Classroom Music Teacher and director of one of our ensembles. As I pass the baton to the talented Mr Thomas Williams as the new Director of Music, I would like to thank all of the students who are either currently involved or have passed through the program, the very supportive school administration who have always understood the importance of music education and of course the best instrumental music staff going around.
The Instrumental staff are central to the success of the music program. Their commitment to Music Education is superior to anything else I have experienced. Evidence of this is always on display at school concerts and it is largely due to them that we enjoy an excellent reputation within the school and wider community.
I look forward to being involved and seeing the continued development of the Music Program in the years to come.
