School for Student Leadership

by Ms Chloe Martinich, Leading Teacher - Student Voice, Agency & Leadership

The School for Student Leadership is a department school that runs term-long residential programs for Year 9 students. These programs provide experiential education that supports them to grown into better citizens and leaders through increased self-awareness, social engagement, community connection and environmental stewardship.

This term, we had six Year 9 students attend the SSL Gnurad-Gundidj campus. At the culmination of the program, students develop a community leadership project that they will bring back and enact at their home school.

Last Friday, Mr Breese and Ms Martinich were privileged to be invited to the presentation day for these students and hear about their CLP project. The students’ project aims to improve the transition program for next year’s Year 7 students, and they plan to create several lessons to be delivered to students as well as accompanying them on their Year 7 camp at the beginning of 2025.

All of the projects that were presented had a deep commitment to helping others and it was wonderful to see how well the program had developed a service-oriented leadership mindset in the students that would enable them to lead with purpose to create a positive impact on their world.

Congratulations to Khai Xuan, Vanshi, Rani, Louis, Lucia and Sym for participating in this experience. We can’t wait to support you in implementing your community learning project next year.
