Middle School update

by Ms Eleanor Smith, Head of Middle School

What a big Term 4 we had in Middle School! Our students participated in a range of wellbeing and educational activities, creating many memorable moments and valuable learning experiences.

As part of their Year 10 Program, students enjoyed two full-day excursions focusing on physical and mental health and wellbeing. They participated in recreation activities such as rock climbing, tree-top adventures, ice-skating, stand-up paddle boarding, and hiking.

These activities provided opportunities to strengthen connections within the group and build a sense of belonging while exploring themes of health and wellbeing. Year 9 students ventured into the city for their Citizenship Camp, where they researched topics related to increasing social cohesion and celebrating diversity. Their hard work culminated in a presentation evening where they shared their findings with families. It was fantastic to see students confidently engaging with staff, parents, and guardians during this event.

Our Year 10 students demonstrated dedication and effort during their exam period. They prepared thoroughly, applied themselves, and should be proud of their achievements. They also attended their Jumpstart program where they met their Year 11 teachers and were introduced to their new subjects for 2025. Students have holiday homework to complete and be ready with for their first day back next year.

In RESPECT classes, Year 9 students organised a creative and successful fundraiser to support the Mullum Mullum Indigenous Gathering Place. It was inspiring to see the variety of stalls and activities they developed to raise funds for such an important cause.

Six of our Year 9 students – Rani, Sym, Lucia, Louis, Khai, and Vanshi - spent the term at the Gnurad-Gundidj campus of The School for Student Leadership. They participated in outdoor recreation activities such as canoeing and hiking along the Great Ocean Walk, while also developing emotional literacy and teamwork skills. During their time there, they worked on a Community Learning Project, which they will implement upon their return next year.

In Week 10, Year 9 students took part in an engaging Activities Week. Highlights included a wellbeing day focused on consent and respectful relationships, trips to Luna Park (see photos below) and Gumbuya World, plus a final assembly with celebration activities to wrap up their year. It has been great getting to know the Year 9 students this year. We look forward to seeing them continue their growth and success as they move into Year 10 in 2025!

To mark the end of their Middle School journey, Year 10 students participated in a fun-filled Celebration Day. Activities included a scavenger hunt, board games, Just Dance, and a pizza lunch. They also enjoyed a Proactivity incursion featuring a giant inflatable zorb chamber, giant earth ball games, and laser tag. It has been great working with this cohort over the past four years! We wish the Year 10s all the best as they transition into Senior School.

I would also like to thank the Middle School team for their dedication and hard work supporting our students this year: Janine Adey and Kylie McCall, for their detailed attendance monitoring and seamless event organisation, Amanda Ghanem, for managing the Year 10 Program curriculum and providing consistent support to staff and students, Tim Dobson, for supporting our Year 9s and providing various opportunities for students to strengthen their connection to school, Deanna Chesterton, for her compassionate approach and unwavering support for our Year 10s. Your commitment has made a lasting difference - thank you!

Wishing all our students and families a safe and happy holiday season!
