Homework at Lysterfield Primary School
At Lysterfield Primary School our students work incredibly hard during the day. At 3.30pm when they leave, they need time to unwind and have fun. We believe that in order to live a happy and healthy life, it is important to participate in extracurricular activities outside school. We want students to join sports clubs, Scouts, do music lessons and art classes as these are important for a child’s overall growth and social connections. We also understand that homework puts a lot of stress on families.
In addition to our beliefs, there is no evidence that homework in a primary school setting has a marked impact on students learning or success. What is proven is that reading daily has a significant impact on a child’s ability to decode and comprehend. As such mandated homework at Lysterfield Primary School is limited to reading daily, including the practising of phonics (letter/sound relationships). Level newsletters will outline the expectations around reading and how teachers will support students with having appropriate texts to read. For some students, who may not be making the expected progress for their year level, it may be beneficial for the teacher and parents to work together to reinforce the learning from the classroom with follow-up work.
We also understand that some students and families would like to practise other skills at home. To support this, at the beginning of each school year, parents will be provided with a set of additional resources that can be used for students to practise other curriculum areas. This work is not mandated and it is up to parents to implement and monitor, staff will not correct this work.

Grade 3 Homework Suggestions
Literature
- Think about the book you are currently reading in class or at home. What are eight questions you would like to ask the author? Make sure the questions relate to the book (ie: not “What is your favourite colour?”).
- From a book/novel at home find and identify 8 unfamiliar words from the text and find their meanings in a dictionary or https://www.wordhippo.com/
- Use these words in another sentence to show your understanding.
- Watch the most recent episode of BTN https://www.abc.net.au/btn/ and take notes on each segment. Include the title and at least 4 facts.
- Record yourself reading a page of your favourite book. Listen to it. Can you read it again with more expression and fluency?
- Think about what you have been focusing on in Word Work, search for words with matching spelling patterns in books at home or write a list of words that have the spelling pattern
Maths
- Practise your times tables (2,3,4,5,10x) by writing them out and reciting them or find a times tables YouTube song and learn it.
- Make a poster/ slideshow to teach someone about something you have just learnt. You may include step by step teaching, strategies and games that you know.
- Mathletics-see your class teacher for your log in
- Practise your maths skills on Topmarks https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button
- Maths Masters!! For those wishing to practise their Maths Masters skills, we have linked the belts with some practise ideas and online games. You will know your belt and goal based on what you are working on at school. All master belts
Learning in Action
Head Start:
To welcome all students into the new year and the beginning of their Grade 3 journey, we have engaged in our Head Start program. Head Start allows time for students to get to know each other, and become familiar with school expectations and both behaviour and learning routines. There is also time spent exploring and revising our Lysterfield school values and learner profile.
Literacy:
During Head Start, students have had the opportunity to set up literacy routines, including; Word Work, fluency partner reading and handwriting. Students also began their first Literature unit of the year, Matilda. Through this unit, students will read the text, pausing to engage in discussions to deepen their comprehension and explore the vocabulary the author has used. They will also develop their grammar skills through set writing tasks and responses.
Preview:
Over the next fortnight, Grade 3 students will begin to focus on their reading goals, and continue fluency partner reading, Word Work and handwriting. Students will read more of Matilda, along with nonfiction texts that help them understand the content and ideas within Matilda on a deeper level. They will also develop their writing skills through planning a narrative and completing sentence-level grammar writing tasks.
Maths:
During Head Start, students have familiarised themselves with all of the maths equipment that we will be using throughout the year. They have revised the different hand signals that are used to show their thinking during Maths hooks and played a range of maths games to help revise concepts such as doubles, and place value. Students have also continued working on their Maths Masters goal.
Students have begun learning about length, looking at the different tools that we use to measure length, as well as the units used (mm, cm, and m). Students have compared objects with different lengths, ordering them from shortest to longest. They have also learnt more about estimating the length of an object.
Preview:
Over the next fortnight, students will explore more about numbers, identifying that they can have different properties, such as odd or even. Students will also be given opportunities to represent numbers in different ways; using MAB, number lines and writing expanded forms of numbers.
Students will use what they have learnt about length to conduct an investigation into the length of dinosaur fossils.
Knowledge Rich: (previously known as Inquiry)

We will be commencing this aspect of the curriculum next week, once Head Start is complete. In Term 1, the focus will be ‘Healthy Me’. Students will start by discussing what makes someone healthy, with an emphasis on mental health. Throughout the fortnight, students will be identifying their personal strengths and how they help create a healthy mind and good relationships. This will be further strengthened through role plays based on common issues which arise in friendships.
Wellbeing:
During Head Start, students have made connections with their new classmates and teacher through get-to-know-you activities. Students have familiarised themselves with our new school values, Teamwork, Respect, Aspire, Community and Kindness. We have brainstormed and discussed ways we can uphold our school values in the classroom, inside, outside and digitally. Students have enjoyed sharing how we can have a growth mindset during our learning and the importance of being in The Learning Pit when we are trying something new. Students showed their creative side as we created our class Kindness Tree, allowing students to contribute to the tree by highlighting acts of kindness within their class and sharing kind messages.
Preview:
During the next fortnight as part of Friendology, students will begin to look at their ‘inner ninja’ and how we need to show kindness to ourselves as if we were our own best friend. Students will also explore strategies for making new friends.
If you have any questions or would like to arrange a meeting with your child’s teacher, please don’t hesitate to get in touch via Compass at any point during the year.
We look forward to meeting you at the upcoming Meet the Teacher interviews.
Have a wonderful weekend,
Grade 3 Team,
Mrs Rosewarne, Mrs Huxley, Mrs Stokol and Miss du Vallon
