From the Principal

Mr Torpey

St Justin’s Primary School acknowledges the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as Australia's First People and Traditional Custodians of the land and waterways on which our school stands.

We pay our respects to the Bunurong people of the Kulin Nation, and their elders past and present, and emerging as we continue to proudly live and learn on their land.

St Justin's Primary School - Celebrating 40 years of Catholic Education

Dear Families and Friends,

St Justin's 40th Anniversary Celebrations

This Sunday 27th October we celebrate our 40th Anniversary. Celebrations are planned with a Mass commencing  at 10:00am.

We want to thank you for your support and look forward to celebrating such a significant milestone with our community.

Year 5/6 Science Dome Incursion

On Wednesday the 23rd the Year 5 and 6’s had an Incursion about Space. The day was split into three parts. In the morning they Year 5 and 6’s would be split into three different groups, these groups would take part in 3 different activities throughout the day.

One of the activities was the space dome, a massive blow up dome that would create an immersive and exciting experience for all who got to take part in the activity. We also all got to create our very own planet. Using coffee filters, we coloured in the filters using textas before wetting them with a spray made of water. This created a nice watercolour texture. We then glued the planets we made onto black sheets of paper and hung them up in the corridor outside our classrooms. The 3rd activity we got to do was make a fact sheet about any planet of our choice. We made these on Canva and got to decorate it however we liked.

After lunch the year 6’s gathered together in one classroom and watched a movie, Space Jam 2. Everyone enjoyed the movie greatly. This day was an immersive experience that everyone enjoyed. It gave us a new insight into space and the stars and planets that surround us.

Year 3/4 Excursion

Yesterday the years 3s and 4s went on a very exciting excursion at the Melbourne Museum and IMAX! The 3s and 4s enjoyed going around to all the fun and exciting galleries. We experienced the 600 million years gallery, the dynamic earth gallery, the outdoor forest gallery, the bugs alivegallery, the dinosaur walk and the amazing Triceratop, the most complete dinosaur fossil in theworld.

There were so many interesting facts to learn, such as in a few million years time theearth will separate and Australia won’t really exist.Extreme Weather is a documentary about our world and how fast it’s changing due to nature’sforces and extreme weather. We watched the 40 minute long documentary on the colossal IMAX screen with a staggering 32m in length and 23m in height! The film was about the different types of extreme weather and how it affects our planet. It showed us melting glaciers, raging tornados, out of control bushfires and violent storms. It also showed us heroes who weretrying to fix it.

We’d like to thank our teachers for organising this amazing experience for us. We can’t wait to find out more about the impact that extreme weather has on our beautiful planet.

World Teachers Day

Today we celebrate World Teachers’ Day  (the last Friday in October for Australia).  Every day our staff at St Justin's make a positive difference - creating opportunities for their students, empowering minds of young people and proudly teaching our future leaders, innovators and influencers.  World Teachers' Day is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate and thank all of our staff for the important role they play.  I wish to personally thank all staff who work so tirelessly at St Justin’s.  Our staff are very caring and always for innovative ways to meet the needs of every child at our school.  We are so fortunate to have a wonderful and caring team at St Justin’s.

Grandparents Day

Preparing for the thunderstorm asthma season

Every year between October and December, there is an increase in hay fever symptoms. During grass pollen season, there is also the chance of an epidemic thunderstorm asthma event (a sudden increase in asthma cases associated with high pollen and an impending thunderstorm).

People at increased risk of epidemic thunderstorm asthma include those with:

  • Asthma,
  • A past history of asthma,
  • Undiagnosed asthma (who have asthma symptoms, but have not yet been formally diagnosed) and hay fever (who may or may not have asthma).

Having both asthma and hay fever, as well as poor control and self-management of asthma, increases the risk.

To prepare for this season, we ask that students have a current asthma action plan (developed with the treating medical team) and an allergy plan if required − keep asthma & antihistamine medications readily accessible.

The school will endeavour to:

  • avoid circumstances in which students and staff are outside in thunderstorms that occur between October and December, especially during the wind gusts that come before a storm,
  • designate first aid staff who have completed the relevant asthma training and are confident in administering asthma first aid,
  • download the VicEmergency app to receive warnings of high-risk days and potential epidemic thunderstorm asthma events, recording that this has been done in the school’s emergency management plan (EMP)

When renewing our Emergency Management Plan,  our school considers how we would respond to an epidemic thunderstorm asthma ‘emergency warning’ during or immediately after dismissal for the day.

First Aid Room

We take this opportunity to remind families that the First Aid Room is a place where we respect our students privacy at all times.

We respectfully request that you do not enter the First Aid Room unless you are invited in by a staff member.

Fair on the Hill

Our Annual St Justin's Fair on the Hill is fast approaching with an amazing amount of work already done. Remember it is being held on Saturday 9th November 2024 from 11:00am-4:00pm.

This is also a good time to check your Working with Children Checks - our data base indicates that some have already expired and others are close to expiring - we would hate you to be rushing to volunteer only to discover your WWCC in no longer valid. For more information, please visit WWCC. Please remember that all volunteers will require a WWCC.

School Fees

A reminder that all School Fees are due to be finalised by Tuesday 31st October

With families keeping up with payments or organising for assistance this allows us to maintain activities and programs we already have in place at St. Justin's. We would greatly appreciate your support in regard to this matter.

As is our ongoing practice, should any family’s financial situation have changed, please contact Patrick Torpey or office staff on 9561 7644 or email office@sjwheelershill.catholic.edu.au

Have a great weekend and we look forward to seeing you all next week.

All the best,

Pat
