Learning in Action
Literacy:
In Literacy, Grade Five students have been focusing on their narrative writing skills. They are learning to add dialogue correctly, using punctuation to bring their characters’ conversations to life. A key part of their narratives is creating a storyline that includes an event powerful enough to change their character’s personality, adding depth to their stories. This week, students also began their Passion Projects, where they’ll select a topic they’re passionate about and complete a narrative, persuasive piece, and information report on it. Excitingly, students have just started writing their Passion Project narratives, and we look forward to seeing their creativity shine!
Preview for Learning:
Over the next fortnight, students will continue developing their Passion Projects, starting their information reports next week. They will also focus on using the correct tense in their writing, along with revisiting key grammar concepts learned earlier in the term.
Maths:
In Maths, Grade Five students have been exploring shape transformations over the past fortnight. Using the same shape, they’ve practised completing reflections, translations, and rotations, gaining a strong understanding of how shapes move and change position. They have also been learning to describe these movements with terms like horizontal, vertical, 90 degrees, 180 degrees, clockwise, and anti-clockwise. Additionally, students have worked on accurately enlarging shapes.
Preview for Learning:
Over the next fortnight students will begin their revision of Maths concepts taught throughout this Semester, beginning with subtraction. Students will be revising strategies such a split and vertical algorithm to solve a series of worded and numerical problems.
Inquiry:
This term, Grade Five students have been diving into the world of economics, learning about key concepts such as wants vs. needs, producers and consumers, and, most recently, bartering. With this knowledge, students have teamed up with a partner or small group to create business plans for their upcoming Market Day stalls. They have been budgeting and assigning roles to ensure a successful event. Grade Five students are eagerly preparing for Market Day on December 3rd, where they look forward to showcasing their stalls and hopefully raising some funds from their hard work!
Colour Run
On Friday, November 8th, students took part in the LPS Colour Run, and it was an incredible experience! The energy was high as everyone cheered each other on, creating an atmosphere full of excitement and support. It was wonderful to see students enjoying themselves and encouraging one another throughout the event.
Rugby Gala
On the first of November, the Grade Five students got to play tag rugby at Kings Park. We barely lost any games out of our four teams and everyone played a part as we reached for victory, having so much fun.
Our day only got better; at around lunchtime there was a relay race where we nominated our fastest sprinters out of the girls and boys and teachers (Yes, there was a teacher relay, too). Although the placings weren’t confirmed, I think we did particularly well. Next we had a dance off! Everyone surrounded the tent as the music played loudly out of the massive speakers. Although no school was given the title of being the winner for the dance competition, I know our school should have won.
Overall, it was an amazing experience and beats being back at school.
