Important Reminders!
All important dates and events are on our Compass Calendar, please check the calendar regularly to stay up to date!
- Take-home books: students need to bring their take-home book to school every Monday so they can get a new book for the week to practise at home. We are noticing a large number of students who are forgetting. Ensuring your child returns their book each week will help them make the most of their at home reading experience.
- Excursion: Melbourne Zoo 18th November - Please pack your child's SNACK and LUNCH in two separate paper bags. Ensure these are labelled with your child's name and 'Snack' or 'Lunch'.
Learning in Action
Literacy:
In Literacy this week, our Prep students have been busy finishing their writing unit on narratives. They had a lot of fun creating their own stories with a clear beginning, middle, and end. It was wonderful to see their imaginations come to life as they wrote their own narratives, practising how to structure a story in a way that makes sense and flows.
Alongside narratives, the Preps were introduced to persuasive writing. They learned what an opinion is and how to justify their opinions by using the word 'because' to explain 'why' they think a certain way. It was exciting to see them express their thoughts and ideas in a convincing way, and they’re really starting to understand how to back up their opinions!
In reading, we enjoyed two fantastic stories: *Thelma the Unicorn* and *Edward the Emu*. After reading these books, the Preps were able to identify the main characters, the setting, the problem, and the solution in each story. It was great practice for building their comprehension skills and understanding the key parts of a story.
In Word Work, we’ve continued learning about digraphs—the two letters that make one sound. This week, we focused on ‘ng’, ‘ch’, ‘ck’, ‘th’, and ‘sh’. The students are doing a wonderful job recognising and using these sounds in their reading and writing.
Preview- Preps will continue to learn about persuasives.
Maths:
We have successfully completed our exploration of all the Number concepts and have now begun revisiting and consolidating everything we've learned throughout the year. The students have had a great time engaging with hands-on materials and participating in fun addition and subtraction games, which have been a fantastic way to reinforce their mathematical skills.
Additionally, the students have refreshed their understanding of length by searching for and comparing items around the classroom that are either longer or shorter.
Preview - Students will continue engaging in revision activities for all the number concepts we have learnt this year.
Inquiry:
This week in Inquiry, our Prep students have been learning about waste and where it goes after we throw it away. They explored how waste ends up in landfill and discussed the importance of recycling.
The students talked about the different coloured bins we use at home—green, yellow, and red—and what types of waste go into each one. They learned which items can be recycled, composted, or put in the general waste bin.
To help them remember, each student created a poster in their Inquiry books showing what can be recycled and what is waste. This activity helped them think about how they can make better choices at home and at school to reduce waste.
It’s great to see how much the Preps are learning about taking care of the environment! We look forward to continuing this important topic in the weeks ahead.
Preview- We will be further investigating recycling and the many ways to recycle.
Colour Run:
What a vibrant and exciting day we had at the Colour Run! Our Prep students absolutely loved participating in this fun event, where they ran, laughed, and got covered in splashes of colourful powder—all while supporting a great cause.
The Colour Run was not only a chance for our Preps to enjoy some physical activity and get active with their classmates, but it also provided an opportunity to raise funds for our school. The energy and enthusiasm were contagious, as students cheered each other on, crossing the finish line with big smiles and bright colours!
A huge thank you to all the families, friends, and community members who supported the event by participating and making generous donations. Your support helps make wonderful events like this possible and directly contributes to the continued growth and development of our school community.
It’s always heart warming to see our students come together for such a fun and meaningful event. We look forward to more moments like this in the future! Thank you again to everyone who helped make the Colour Run a memorable day!
WELLBEING:
This week, our Prep classes have been taking some time to focus on their wellbeing. As the term goes on, it’s normal for students to start feeling a little tired, so we wanted to make sure they had a chance to relax and recharge.
Our Preps have been enjoying activities like meditation, yoga, and quiet mindfulness colouring. These activities help them slow down, focus, and clear their minds, giving them a break from their busy school day. Not only are these sessions fun, but they also help our students feel refreshed and ready to continue learning.
As the term progresses, it’s important to listen to how our students are feeling and support their emotional and mental wellbeing. By taking time for activities that help them relax, our students are learning valuable skills to stay calm and focused.
We look forward to continuing these wellbeing sessions and helping our students stay balanced and happy throughout the term.
Preview- Students will talk about what to do if someone tells them that they can’t do something because of their gender.
