Year Five
Dear Year Five families,
It's hard to believe that we are more than halfway through the term already! The Year Five classes have been busy learning and practising their Christmas Carols in preparation for them to present at our Carols event. We will be able to share more information about this event shortly.
Reading:
In Reading, Students have been actively engaging with their reading rotations, thoughtfully connecting their work to our new Unit of Inquiry on Electricity. They have tackled SOLO Taxonomy questions centred around a scientific experiment on Herd Mentality, with many classes conducting the experiment firsthand. Students were intrigued by the surprising results and observations that emerged. Additionally, students are deepening their comprehension skills by participating in reciprocal reading and book club groups. Teachers are impressed with the progress and dedication students have shown as they thoughtfully engage with and analyze the text.
Maths:
In Maths, Students have been exploring a unit on angles. They have been identifying different types of angles and finding real-life examples to deepen their understanding. As their knowledge developed, students applied what they learned to solve real-world problems involving angles.
Inquiry and DreamCity:
In Inquiry, we have started our last unit for the year based on the science of light and energy. Students have been excited to take part in various experiments, creating simple circuits and attempting to produce power from lemons. It is wonderful to see students being inquirers by asking questions to clarify and problem-solving.
Writing:
In Writing, Students have been drafting their scientific reports based on experiments conducted during their Inquiry lessons. They are deepening their understanding of the structure and purpose of these reports. Additionally, Students have been dedicating time to editing and revising their work using the VCOP framework to enhance their writing.
Remembrance Day:
On Monday November 11th, Students participated in a special assembly to commemorate Remembrance Day. They observed a moment of silence and wore poppies to honour the occasion. The assembly provided an opportunity for students to reflect on the sacrifices made by those throughout history.
Important Reminders
- On PE days and Fridays, students are permitted to wear their sports uniform. Students must be in their full academic uniform on the other days.
- In Term Four, all students must wear school hats at recess and lunch break times.
- Our school day commences at 8:30am and students will be welcomed into the classroom each day from 8.20am, which will give them time to prepare for their day ahead. Any student who arrives after 8.40am must sign in at the office and obtain a late pass.
- Student absences must be marked on XUNO as soon as possible by a parent or carer.
- Please ensure your students get in the habit of charging their laptops overnight so that they are ready to be used for learning during the school day.
As always, thank you for your ongoing support and encouragement. We’re so proud of how hard the students are working!
Kind regards,
The Year Five Team
