Year Three
Dear Year Three Community,
We’re excited to share the fantastic learning experiences from this fortnight. As Term Four progresses, it’s been amazing to see our students grow, challenge themselves, and achieve new goals. Their energy, enthusiasm, and commitment as thinkers, communicators, and risk-takers have made this a truly productive and rewarding time.
Reading
In Reading, students have been developing the skill of scanning texts to identify key vocabulary related to the topic. This valuable skill is helping them gain a deeper understanding of the topic. To further enhance their learning, students have also been exploring different note-taking techniques, such as the Cornell Method and Sketch Notes. These strategies are empowering them to effectively organise and capture important information as they conduct their research.
Writing
In Writing, students have been exploring the features and structure of an information report. They were given the opportunity to select an ecosystem of their choice and conducted thorough research using reliable sources to gather facts. This process allowed them to develop detailed and well-informed reports, and they took great pride in publishing their work. Additionally, students are learning to craft persuasive texts aimed at convincing the reader. They are being introduced to a range of persuasive techniques, such as rhetorical questions, repetition, high-modality words, and the use of facts and statistics, to strengthen their arguments and effectively persuade their audience.
Maths
In Maths, students have been engaged in learning about measurement, focusing on mass, volume, capacity, area, and perimeter. They are developing their skills in using formal units of measurement to read scales and compare the mass, volume, and capacity of various objects. To extend their thinking, students have been challenged to convert units, such as from litres to millilitres and grams to kilograms, and vice versa. Additionally, students have been calculating the area and perimeter of different shapes. As part of the Launch, Explore, and Discuss model lesson, they enjoyed designing and creating house plans with specified area and perimeter requirements. This approach has helped deepen their understanding of measurement concepts and provided opportunities to showcase their problem-solving skills through open-ended questions.
Inquiry
In Inquiry, students have been exploring the interdependence of the various components within ecosystems. They have started researching different ecosystems to examine the biotic and abiotic elements that make up each ecosystem. Additionally, students are investigating the concept of interdependence by exploring food webs and chains, learning how organisms rely on each other for survival. Through this, they are gaining insights into how plants, animals, and both biotic and abiotic components are interconnected and depend on each other within their ecosystems.
